Title: Developing NonTraditional

1
Developing Non-Traditional Content Types for
Traditional Business Databases
Sam Brooks ABLD Meeting May 2, 2003
2
Introduction
  • EBSCOs flagship product is Business Source
    Premier (BSP)
  • EBSCOs primary focus for BSP is on improving the
    followingaspects of the database
  • Applying high quality thesaurus terms to records
    in the database
  • Enhancing the quality and length of EBSCO-created
    abstracts
  • Enhancing the quantity and quality of full text
    journals licensed,including signing long-term
    contracts with most leading publishers
  • These issues will not be covered today, because
they are likelyto appear to be too salesy.
  • For this reason, a less crucial and less
    competitive area was selectedfor this
    discussion.
  • However, it is important to be clear that
non-traditional content types are a secondary
focus for EBSCO and the discussion of this topic
is an attempt to respect the guidelines that have
    been set for this forum.

3
What are Non-Traditional Content Typesfor
traditional business databases?
  • Most traditional business databases contain
coverage (i.e. indexing, abstracts and/or full
text) of magazines and journals, as well as some
    kind of company information component
  • Non-traditional content types for business
indexes include dozens of new data groups that
were rarely (if ever) previously considered
    standard in these products
  • Traditional business databases are defined as
    EBSCOsBusiness Source (Elite Premier) Gales
    Business ASAPand Business Company Resource
Center H.W. Wilsons Business Periodical Index
    ProQuests ABI/INFORM(Global, Complete, etc.)

Examples of Non-Full Text, Non-Traditional
Content Types for Business Databases
  • Author Provided Content
  • Author Supplied Abstracts in BSP replacing
    vendor-written abstracts
  • Author Keywords soon available in BSP for
    enhanced searching capabilities
  • Author Affiliations coming soon to BSP from
    some large academic publishers
  • Author Email Addresses coming soon to BSP
    fromsome large academic publishers
  • Linked Cited References
  • Typically, ISI has been the main provider of this
    type of data
  • ISI is strong in the hard sciences, but weak in
some areasof the soft sciences, especially
    business
  • ISIs Business Collection contains only 234
journals(vs. 1100 coming to BSP in June)
  • No traditional business database will replace
ISI,but a previously weak area is now addressed
