Leadership
  • Leadership within the workplace is the process
of influencing employees to work toward the
    achievement of objectives (goals).
  • Effective leadership must include Emotional
Intelligence the process of managing feelings
so that employees are expressed appropriately and
effectively, enabling people to work together
    smoothly toward their common goals

9
Leadership Facts
  • Effective leadership is elusive to many people
    and organizations.
  • Day-to-day, executives must use the right
leadership styles, using the right tool at the
right time for the right business situation.
  • Research conducted by the consulting firm
Hay/McBer which was based on a sample of 3,871
executives from a worldwide database of 20,000
    executives, found six distinct leadership
styles, each one based upon a component of
    emotional intelligence.

10
Six Styles of Leadership
  • Leadership Styles at a glance

11
Leadership Style Wrap Up
  • Research indicates that effective leaders utilize
    a combination of leadership styles
  • Leadership style depends upon the business
    situation
  • Only four of the six leadership styles
consistently and positively effect the climate
  • The perfect analogy of utilizing leadership
styles is that of a carpenter who typically has
many tools to choose from, all serving a specific
purpose depending upon the job at hand. A hammer
is used in one type of project while a saw and
drill will be required of another and the
carpenter automatically uses the correct tool and
immediately puts the tool to work.

12
Leaders need many styles
  • Leaders who have mastered four or more styles,
    especially the authoritative, democratic,
affiliative, and coaching style have the best
    climate and business performance.
  • The most effective leaders switch flexibly among
    styles as needed.
  • Leaders adjust their style to get the best
    results.

13
Affiliative
  • People come first
  • Empathy, building relationships, communication

14
Coaching
  • Try this
  • Developing others, empathy, self-awareness

15
Democratic
  • What do you think?
  • Collaboration, team leadership, communication

16
Authoritative
  • Come with me
  • Self-confidence, empathy, change catalyst

17
Coercive
  • Do what I tell you
  • Drive to achieve, initiative, self-control

18
Expanding your repertory
  • The leader can build a team with members who
    employ styles the leader lacks.
  • Leaders should expand their own style
repertories. The leader must first understand
    which emotional intelligence competencies
underlie the leadership styles they lack.

19
Growing your emotional intelligence
  • It can be learned at any age
  • It takes practice and commitment
  • -------------------------------------------------
    ---------
  • Use your leadership styles like a pro using
the right ones at the right time and in the right
    measure.
  • The pay off will be in the results
