Type of Facilities

• Group E Educational more than 5 children
  older than 2 ½ of age.
• Group I-4, day care facilities provides care on
  less than 24 hr basis for more than 5 children 2
  ½ or less. See Exception Group I-2, child
  care facilities provides care on a 24 hr. basis
  to more than 5 children 2 ½ age or less
• Group R-4 provides accommodations in a
  residence occupied as a home by the caregiver for
  persons of any age less than 24 hrs

General Precautions

• Attics, basements, closets, garages, furnace
  rooms and heaters clear of trash and combustible
  material.
• 304.1 Waste accumulation prohibited. Combustible
  waste material creating a fire hazard shall not
  be allowed to accumulate in buildings or
  structures or upon premises.

General Precautions

• Clearances from ignition sources and combustible
  materials maintained.
• 305.1 Clearance from ignition sources. Clearance
  between ignition sources, such as light fixtures,
  heaters and flame-producing devices, and
  combustible materials shall be maintained in an
  approved manner.

Emergency Planning

• Approved evacuation plan posted.
• F404.2 Where required. An approved fire safety
  and evacuation plan shall be prepared and
  maintained for the following occupancies and
  buildings.

Emergency Planning

• Evidence of monthly fire drills posted.
• 405.1 General. Emergency evacuation drills
  complying with the provisions of this section
  shall be conducted in the occupancies listed in
  404.2 or when required by the code official.
  Drills shall be designed in cooperation with the
  local authorities.

• F405.5 Record keeping. Records shall be
  maintained of required emergency evacuation
  drills and include the following information
• 1. Identity of the person conducting the drill.
• 2. Date and time of the drill.
• 3. Notification method used.
• 4. Staff members on duty and participating.
• 5. Number of occupants evacuated.
• 6. Special conditions simulated.
• 7. Problems encountered.
• 8. Weather conditions when occupants were
  evacuated.
• 9. Time required to accomplish complete
  evacuation.

Emergency Planning

• Record of employee training in fire
  prevention/evacuation and annual fire safety
  training on site
• 406.2 Frequency. Employees shall receive training
  in the contents of fire safety and evacuation
  plans and their duties as part of new employee
  orientation and at least annually thereafter.
  Records shall be kept and made available to the
  code official upon request. Training should
  consist of familiarization of the fire alarm
  system, fire extinguisher use, CPR, Carbon
  Monoxide awareness.
• Fire Superintendents to provide copy of fire
  training conducted with staff members.

Fire Service Features

• Street Number Posted (4 or higher )
• 505.1 Address numbers. New and existing buildings
  shall have approved address numbers, building
  numbers, or approved building identification
  placed in a position to be plainly legible and
  visible from the street or road fronting the
  property. These numbers shall contrast with their
  background. Address numbers shall be Arabic
  numerals or alphabet letters. Numbers shall be a
  minimum of 4 inches (102 mm) high with a minimum
  stroke width of 0.5 inch (12.7 mm).

• Unobstructed fire apparatus road.
• 503.1.1 Buildings and facilities. Approved fire
  apparatus access roads shall be provided for
  every facility, building or portion of a building
  hereafter constructed or moved into or within the
  jurisdiction. The fire apparatus access road
  shall comply with the requirements of this
  section and shall extend to within 150 feet (45
  720 mm) of all portions of the facility or any
  portion of the exterior wall of the first story
  of the building as measured by an approved route
  around the exterior of the building or facility.

• Hydrants/Fire Department connections/control
  valves clear of obstructions by 3.
• 508.5.4 Obstruction. Posts, fences, vehicles,
  growth, trash, storage and other materials or
  objects shall not be placed or kept near fire
  hydrants, fire department inlet connections or
  fire protection system control valves in a manner
  that would prevent such equipment or fire
  hydrants from being immediately discernible. The
  fire department shall not be deterred or hindered
  from gaining immediate access to fire protection
  equipment or fire hydrants.

• Approved heating system, listed.
• 603.4 Portable un-vented heaters. Portable
  un-vented fuel-fired heating equipment shall be
  prohibited in occupancies in Groups A, E, I, R-1,
  R-2, R-3 and R-4.

• Emergency Lighting /Exit lights in good operating
  order.
• 1003.2.10.1 Where required. Exits and exit access
  doors shall be marked by an approved exit sign
  readily visible from any direction of egress
  travel. Access to exits shall be marked by
  readily visible exit signs in cases where the
  exit or the path of egress travel is not
  immediately visible to the occupants. Exit sign
  placement shall be such that no point in an exit
  access corridor is more than 100 feet (30 480 mm)
  from the nearest visible exit sign.

• Electrical panels clear of storage. (Minimum 30)
• 605.3 Working space and clearance. A working
  space of not less than 30 inches (762 mm) in
  width, 36 inches (914 mm) in depth and 78 inches
  (1981 mm) in height shall be provided in front of
  electrical service equipment. Where the
  electrical service equipment is wider than 30
  inches (762 mm), the working space shall not be
  less than the width of the equipment. No storage
  of any materials shall be located within the
  designated working space.

• Wiring/fixtures in good condition. (Extension
  cords not suitable for permanent wiring.)
• 605.1 Abatement of electrical hazards. Identified
  electrical hazards shall be abated. Identified
  hazardous electrical conditions in permanent
  wiring shall be brought to the attention of the
  code official responsible for enforcement of the
  ICC Electrical Code. Electrical wiring, devices,
  appliances and other equipment that is modified
  or damaged and constitutes an electrical shock or
  fire hazard shall not be used.

• Type I hood system over all domestic cooking
  appliances that produce grease laden vapors.
• 609.2.2 Domestic cooking appliances used for
  commercial purposes. Domestic cooking appliances
  utilized for commercial purposes shall be
  provided with Type I hoods as required for the
  type of appliances and processes in accordance
  with 609.2 and 609.2.1.

Fire Resistant Rated Construction

• Required fire resistant rating maintained.
  (Walls, Partitions, Floors)
• 703.1 Maintenance. The required fire-resistance
  rating of fire-resistance-rated construction
  (including walls, fire stops, shaft enclosures,
  partitions and floors) shall be maintained. Such
  elements shall be properly repaired, restored or
  replaced when damaged, altered, breached or
  penetrated. Openings made therein for the passage
  of pipes, electrical conduit, wires, ducts, air
  transfer openings, and holes made for any reason
  shall be protected with approved methods capable
  of resisting the passage of smoke and fire.
  Openings through fire-resistance-rated assemblies
  shall be protected by self-closing or
  automatic-closing doors of approved construction
  meeting the fire protection requirements for the
  assembly.

Fire Resistant Rated Construction

• Door-hold open devices/automatic door closures
  operating properly.
• 703.2.2 Hold-open devices and closers. Hold-open
  devices and automatic door closers, where
  provided, shall be maintained. During the period
  that such device is out of service for repairs,
  the door it operates shall remain in the closed
  position.

• No storage of clothing/personal effects in
  corridors and lobbies.
• 803.3.1 Storage in corridors and lobbies.
  Clothing and personal effects shall not be stored
  in corridors and lobbies.
• Group E and I-4 Facilities

  walls. Does not apply to artwork and teaching

• 803.3.2 Artwork. Artwork and teaching materials
  shall be limited on the walls of corridors to not
  more than 20 percent of the wall area.

• Exits free of obstructions.
• 1011.3 Obstructions. A means of egress shall be
  free from obstructions that would prevent its
  use, including the accumulation of snow and ice.

• M507.2.2 Domestic cooking appliances used for
  commercial purposes.
• Domestic cooking appliances utilized for
  commercial purposes shall be provided with Type I
  or II hoods as required for the type of appliance
  and processed in accordance with 507.2 and
  507.2.1
• Exception- A maximum of 2 residential ranges ( 4
  burner) in stalled in dwelling units, churches,
  schools, day care centers, break areas, and
  similar installations

Fire Protection

• Sprinkler system maintained with annual test
  reports provided.
• 901.6 Inspection, testing and maintenance. Fire
  detection, alarm and extinguishing systems shall
  be maintained in an operative condition at all
  times, and shall be replaced or repaired where
  defective. Nonrequired fire protection systems
  and equipment shall be inspected, tested and
  maintained or removed.

Fire Protection

• Smoke detector/fire alarm system maintained with
  annual test reports provided.
• 907.20 Inspection, testing and maintenance. The
  maintenance and testing schedules and procedures
  for fire alarm and fire detection systems shall
  be in accordance with this section and Chapter 7
  of NFPA 72

• Approved extinguishers mounted properly and in
  good working order.
• 906.2 General requirements. Fire extinguishers
  shall be selected, installed and maintained in
  accordance with this section and NFPA 10.

• 6 month testing required.

Means of Egress

• All exits and their access to them shall be free
  of obstructions.
• All locking devices on exit doors are of an
  approved type.
