FOR INSPIRATION RECOGNITION of SCIENCE
TECHNOLOGY
WHAT IS
FIRST?
We want to change the culture by celebrating the
mind. We need to show kids that its more fun to
design and create a video game than it is to play
one. Dean Kamen, Founder of FIRST
Participants refine personal skills that they
will call upon throughout life, such as teamwork,
creativity, and sociabilityskills that make for
successful adults . Woodie Flowers MIT
Professor and National Advisor of FIRST

FIRST USES ROBOTICS TECHNOLOGY TO INSPIRE KIDS
WHAT IS
FIRST?
FIRST is a nonprofit organization
FIRST Robotics Competition for High School
students piloted in 1992
FIRST LEGO League for Middle School students
began in 1998
FIRST Place, the RD facility supports the
robotics programs, built in 1998

WHERE CURIOSITY MEETS TECHNOLOGY
WHAT IS
FIRST LEGO League?
Worldwide robotics-based program for 9-14
year-old children
Created through a partnership between FIRST and
The LEGO Company
Based on FIRSTs innovative approach to learning
using the LEGO MINDSTORMS technologies as a tool
for hands-on learning

Learn with adults and mentors
  • DO IT ALL IN 8 WEEKS
  • Building, programming, testing, investigating
  • solutions
  • Compete with peers in friendly tournaments
  • Present solutions to a real-world problem to a
  • panel of judges

KIDS LEARN
WHAT IS
The Impact?
by doing,
through teamwork,
that solving problems is fun and interesting,
that math and science apply to real-life
situations,
and just how much they can achieve

RAPID GROWTH
WHAT IS
The Impact?
From 1998
From 1999
From 2000
From 2003
From 2001
From 2002

NO LIMITS 2004
WHAT IS
The Impact?
Teams learn how to use robotics technology to
assist people with various levels of abilities.
Society as a whole benefits when creativity,
technology and open minds come together to help
make equality for all people, regardless of
physical differences.
13
MISSION TO MARS 2003
WHAT IS
The Impact?
The Challenge was to visit the Red Planet and
explore the Martian landscape with visions of
colonization.
CITY LIMITS 2002
Team explores technology can be used to help the
environment.
ARCTIC IMPACT 2001
Teams visit the Arctic and learn how to use
robotics technology to study global climate
change.

FIRST IS CHANGING LIFE GOALS FOR KIDS
WHAT IS
The Impact?
FIRST inspires a love of science, math and
technology 98 of participants state theyd like
to return the following year
A Lasting Level of Engagement and
Participation 62 of FLL kids want to try the
FIRST Robotics Competition in high school
A New Path for Success in Life FIRST contributes
over 4 Million in college scholarships for
participants who attend engineering programs
Life skills beyond science Kids develop useful
life skills research, documentation, marketing,
conflict resolution, quality analysis, project
management, and more

The Impact?
PARENTS
With the careful guidance and nurturing of these
wonderful mentors, our son has become a confident
young man who has found a place where his natural
curiosity and talent are appreciated. Tom
Kathie Rugani, parents
EDUCATOR
FLL is a very social process that requires
ingenuity, critical thinking, and collaboration.
These are the very skills that make us successful
adults. Devin Blizzard Principal, Copper
Hills Elementary School Fresno, California

STUDENT MENTOR
FIRST changed my life. I not only grew to
appreciate concepts of math, science, and
engineering, but also to enjoy them. Lauren
Lyons Princeton University student
FLL TEAM MEMBER
I want to build things nobody else has even
thought of yet. Charles Petersen 10 year
old FLL Team Member
FLL TEAM MEMBER
Without our awesome mentor, I probably wouldnt
have the self-confidence to even consider
science and technology as a career choice.

CORPORATE SPONSORS
WHAT IS
The Impact?
The workplace of today and especially tomorrow
needs a diverse group of individuals who are
comfortable about solving complex technical
problems in a team setting. It is rewarding to
see these skills demonstrated in abundance and
with such passion in the FIRST LEGO League .
Dennis Roberson, Executive V.P. and Chief
Technology Officer Motorola, Inc.
FIRST LEGO League enabled us to work for the
whole community. We were able to engage not just
individuals, but a supportive community and that
is certain to have residual benefits . Marvin
Pinkerk, VP, Community Affairs, Museum of Science
and Industry, Chicago
The numbers of students graduating with
scientific and technical degrees continues to
decline. We became seriously concerned about the
futures human talent pool for NASA. Thats why
we set out to find and support programs that
would fill the pipeline Dave Lavery. Program
Executive for Solar System Exploration, NASA

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
YOUR OPPORTUNITY
SEND SOME KIDS TO MARS
95 of FLL coaches say theyd like to return the
next year
97 say theyd recommend coaching an FLL team to
other adults
Coaches are role models, gaining recognition and
admiration from children
Volunteers roles also include event volunteers,
judges, and team coordinators
Its a chance to give back, to share a passion
for science, technology, and engineering
