Title: Physical Adaptations of Animals

1
Physical Adaptations of Animals
  • Adaptationstraits that improve an organisms
    chances for survival and reproduction.
  • Examples
  • The beaks of birds are the proper size and shape
for the foods that they eat. Different birds
have different beak structure and therefore eat
    different foods.
  • Camouflage--the coloration of many animals helps
to hind them from predators or prey. Examples
    arctic hare tiger peppered moth.

Physical Adaptations
  • More Examples
  • Mimicrythe resemblance of an organism either to
an object in its surroundings or to another
organism. Can help to avoid predators
  • Examples Walking stick and a tree branch coral
snake and king snake viceroy and monarch
    butterflies

Physical Adaptations
  • Chemical DefensesSome organisms secrete
foul-smelling chemicals ink or poisons to
protect themselves from predators or to help them
    catch prey.
  • Examples Skunk Octopus Poison Dart Frog
    Snakes

Chemical Defenses
8
Physical Adaptations
  • Physical DefensesSome organisms have physical
defenses like spines, quills, or armor.
  • Examples porcupines sea urchins armadillos

Behavioral Adaptations
  • Behavioral Adaptationsways in which an organism
responds to the environment which increase its
    likelihood of survival or reproduction.
  • Innate BehaviorsReflexes. Sometimes called
inborn or instinctive. Examples Birds ability
to fly the ability of a bird to build a nest.
  • Learned BehaviorsDevelop through experience and
by watching others. Examples Wolves hunting in
packs Chimps using sticks to catch termites
    Reading in humans
  • Learned behaviors are common in the more complex
    animals like reptiles, birds, mammals,
    amphibians, and fish.

11
Behavioral Adaptations
  • Migrationprocess of changing locations
periodically by moving on a seasonal basis. Many
animals migrate to find food or shelter or to
    find warmth.
  • Examples Bird migrations Monarch butterflies
    Whale and Shark migrations
  • Hibernationspending winter in an inactive or
dormant state. Helps animals to conserve energy
in stressful times. The animals lower their
metabolic rates and therefore need less food to
    survive.
  • Examples of animals that hibernate bats
    rattlesnakes chipmunks some squirrels
  • Bears do not hibernate. They are easily awakened
    from their winter sleep.

Behavioral Adaptations
  • Courtship ritualsmany animals have specific
behaviors that help them to attract a mate.
  • Examples Alligator songs Bird songs Bird
flying patterns deer fighting frog calls
  • Living in Herds or Schoolspredators are less
likely to attack a large group.
  • Examples many species of fish zebras
    wildebeests elephants
