- The Department is well-known for its research on
avian diseases (avian influenza, infectious
bursal disease virus, Newcastle disease virus,
avian pneumovirus and avian E. coli), bovine
respiratory diseases, porcine diseases, Lyme
disease, bacterial foodborne pathogens,
veterinary immunology, epidemiology and public
health - The department is a national leader in avian
influenza and Newcastle disease virus - Recently, a new AI diagnostic test was developed
by department faculty and approved by the USDA.
Currently marketed worldwide by Synbiotics - A renovated, state-of-the-art BSL-3Ag facility
for work on highly-pathogenic diseases - All research faculty have at least one
federally-funded grant - Vaccine development novel vaccines for AI and
other avian pathogens

- BSL-3Ag suite has been renovated and upgraded to
a state-of-the-art facility now awaiting final
USDA certification, due in May 2006 - New PolyCom video communication system in both
the Conference Room and Classroom to facilitate
improved interaction among the various campuses
of the VMRCVM and other outside concerns for
teaching classes, meetings, etc. - Renovated classroom including new carpeting,
tables and chairs - Renovated graduate student and postdoc
facilities, including new workstations,
computers, furniture and carpeting - New laboratory facilities and offices for our
recent faculty hires, and another now in
preparation for our recently-advertised
