Multivariate Tests The Newest Technique in
Learning About People Visiting Your Site
2
When dealing with a budget into the billions,
firms such as Microsoft, Facebook and IBM among
others struggle to know the mindset of their
client base. With so much at stake, that is why
these same firms invest millions even more to
find out.
3
Every year, Microsoft for example, continues to
promote its core business of the Windows
operating system. Microsoft and its founder Bill
Gates, knows that he has to fight off the Open
Source attacks led by the Linux operating system
as well as the browser attacks led by Mozilla and
Firefox. With these dual battles on going, Gates
realizes that he has to maintain his core base
while, attracting new users to be able to survive
in this new internet age.
4
Despite knowing this, Gates also realizes that he
has to be able to tweak the Windows operating
system to help it maintain its market share as
well as the Internet Explorer browser. However,
knowing this does not help Gates at all unless he
knows the mindset of his customer. That is why
Gates routinely has his corporation, Microsoft
use Multivariate testing to open up the wants of
his clients so that he can remain on top of the
software world.
5
Gates is an owner who realizes that the software
world changes constantly and this is due to the
ever changing wants and wishes of the buying
public. Just a few years ago smartphones were all
the rage and to tap into that market Microsoft
developed the Windows phone in large part because
of the Multivariate testing they sponsored
whether or not consumers would support a Windows
based phone as compared to the Android system
that first appeared on the market.
6
Finding a positive response to the Windows phone
in the smartphone market, Gates has thrown the
full weight and support of Microsoft into the
full development not only into the making of
handsets but in the actual telecommunication
industry. This has, put such telecommunication
giants as ATT and Verizon on alert because they
now know that they have a competitor in Microsoft
that has the resources and patience to dominant a
market that they once ran with a free rein.
7
Thanks to Multivariate testing, Microsoft
discovered that its clientele, were very open to
having an alternative to the dominance of Apple
and it iconic portable music player, the IPod.
Apple, for years was able to dictate as king of
the portable media market very high prices, as
well as the demand that users had to use its
software and ITune store.
8
If Apple had taken the time to find out what
users thought about their business approach, they
would have found a ground swell of discontent
against it however, Apple was blinded by their
dominance and never really considered that they
had a threat because of the popularity of the
IPod.
9
Microsoft, thanks in large part to Multivariate
testing, did discover that Apples stranglehold
on the portable media player market was causing
discontent. So with that knowledge, Microsoft
developed its own portable media player, the
Zune. And not only did Microsoft develop and
launch its very own portable media player, but
they also did so on a platform that was not as
closed and difficult to expand as Apples IPod
because of what they learned from the results of
the Multivariate testing.
10
Multivariate tests, it is a technique that has
been in place for years to learn about the paying
public. Firms such as Microsoft have used the
testing for years to not only learn about their
own customer base but their competition as well.
