Use the Mouse

• Tour is short 10 minute tutorial.
• Click on the Start button.
• Click on Run
• Type the following c\windows\tour.exe
• Click on OK.

Single click and double click action.

• A left single click is used to select an item.
• A right single click will bring up a context menu
  for the selected item.
• A double click will cause an action, which is
  dependent on the selected item.
• Documents and URLs are opened.
• Title menus are enlarged or restored.
• Executables, files ending in .exe, are run.

• Single click on My Computer.
• What do you see?

• Single click on Network Neighborhood.
• What do you see?

Dragging and Dropping.

• Dragging and dropping is the method used to move
  objects in Windows.
• This is done by single left clicking on and
  object, and keeping your finger on the button,
  and then move your mouse to the drop off point.

Dragging and Dropping Exercise

• Move the My Computer icon to the top right of
  the screen.
• Move the Network Neighborhood icon to the
  bottom right of the screen.
• Move the Recycle Bin to the bottom left of the
  screen
• Play around with moving things on your desktop.
  Try to move the Start Button to the Desktop.
• Now right click on the Desktop and select arrange
  icon. Then select by name.

File Menu

• New Adds a new item.
• Open Opens an existing item.
• Save Saves a current item.
• Save As Save with a different name.
• Page Setup Sets up current page parameters.
• Print Print current item and adjust print
  properties.
• Exit Quits the current program.

Edit Menu

• Undo Undo last change.
• Cut Delete and copy selected item to clip
  board.
• Copy Copy selected item to clip board, but
  dont delete.
• Paste Copy item from clip board to window.
• Delete Delete selected item.
• Select Item Selects every thing in current
  window.

• Help Topics Contains information about how to
  use programs.
• About This will give the version information
  about a program.

• Paste it 5 times.
• Select all, and copy it to clipboard.

• This contains some important information about
  the Computer.
• Right Click on the My Computer and select
  properties.
• What is the version of this Windows 95?
• How much memory is on this Machine?
• Who is this machine registered to?
• What family processor is on this machine?

Task Bar

• The Task Bar is the gray bar with the Start
  button.
• A button appears in the Task Bar for every
  application you open. This allows a switch
  between different applications.
• There are also some short cut utilities on the
  task bar, such as time display, volume control,
  and display controls.
• The Start button is where you start most of
  your programs from.

A Look at the Task Bar

• Microsoft Power Point and Paint are running.
• The yellow speaker icon is the volume control.
• The monitor icon is the display control.
• Double clicking on the time will allow adjustment
  of the time, date, and time zone.
• The red N icon is Novells utilities.

• Open up Notepad and Paint under
  Start-gtPrograms-gtAccessories.
• Switch between the two by using the task bar.
• Mute the sound. What happens to the Yellow
  Speaker?
• Un-mute the sound.

• The properties sheet allows changes or view an
  objects information.
• The properties sheet differs from object to
  object.

• Right click on the Desktop, and select
  properties. What do you get?
• You get the Display Properties Sheet.

• Application Name is displayed.
• You have an option to change the icon and the
  target executable.
• The location of the application is displayed.
• The General tab will allow to set file attributes
  and display creation date of application.

• The Windows 95 help is located on the Start.
• Information on how to use Windows 95.
• There are the contents tab and the index tab.
• Contents tab breaks the help into topic areas.
• Index tab allows you to do a key word search.

Finding a File

• Named The name of the file you are searching
  for on the computer.
• Look in The drive or directory you want to
  search.
• Once the file is found you can view the file or
  run the file. This is dependent on the type of
  file you are looking for.

• This allows you to find computers that are on
  your network.
• An will find the computers in the same work
  group and file servers.

• After a document is found then use quick view or
  edit to view its contents.
• This is done by right clicking on the file and
  selecting quick view or edit.

• Access Explorer by going to Start-gtPrograms-gtWindo

• There are 4 different view setting for Windows
  Explorer
• They are the Small Icon, Large Icon, Detail, and
  List view.
• They have their advantages and disadvantages,
  which is pretty much dependent on the number of
  items to view.

The Small Icon View
This displays a large number of files and objects
with associated Icons.

This view is easier to read, but doesnt show as
many objects at once.

• This is done by going to File-gtNew-gtFolder.
• Create a Folder off of C\ called My Own Folder

Copy and Move Objects

• Copy by selecting an object, and then selecting
  the edit-gtcopy. You can also do this by right
  clicking on an object and selecting copy. Then
  you can paste it into a folder by going to a
  folder and right clicking and selecting paste.
• Move objects by selecting an object, and then
  selecting the edit-gtcut. You can also using the
  right click method.

• Create a folder in My Own Folder called Mine.
• When was the c\autoexec.bat file modified?
• Copy the Online Service in the c\Program Files
  to the c\My Own Folder\mine.

The Recycle Bin

• This is where all deleted objects go until it is
  emptied.
• You clean things out of the recycle bin by right
  clicking and select Empty Recycle Bin.
• Reclaim deleted objects by double clicking and
  then selecting the item you want to restore, and
  then going to file and selecting restore. If an
  object is selected then there will not be a
  restore option under the file menu.

• This is accessed by going into control panel and
  selecting Network, or right click on Network
  Neighborhood and select properties.
• This is where TCP/IP parameters and other
  networking parameters are set.

Setting Up TCP/IP
Public IP addresses must be unique for the whole
world. The gateway is the router. Each school
has their own range for IP addresses. The 10
range is what we use for Private IP addresses,
which are not broadcast outside of the router.

Domain Name Server (DNS) associates and IP
address with a domain name.

Installing Print Driver

• You can do this from control panel or go to
  Start-gtsetting-gtprinters.
• It is very important to know what type of printer
  you have before you start.
• Double click Add Printer.
• Take the defaults options.

• If there is a printer Icon in the bottom right
  hand corner of the screen, then double click on
  this icon.
• If not, then go to Start-gtSettings-gtPrinters, and
  then double click on the appropriate printer.
• Here print jobs can be deleted are put on hold.

• This used mostly for dealing with network
  printing, and is done through the Details tab and
  add port button.
• Then you browse for the appropriate network
  printer.

• S/N will be provide in class also. Then take the
  defaults on everything.

• Go to the Start-gtrun, and then browse to the
  q\masters.dsk\outlook.w32\setup.exe.
• S/N will be provided in class. Take the defaults
  on everything.

Netscape Install

• Go to the Start-gtrun, and then browse to the
  q\masters.dsk\Netscape_win95\cc32e47.exe
• Do a custom install, and uncheck the following
  Import Utility, Addr. Book Palm Sync, RealPlayer
  G2, and Winamp.
• Then continue with defaults until is ask, If you
  want to make Netscape your default browser.
  Then check it and uncheck the other two.
• Then take the defaults.

Netscape Setup

• The first time you run Netscape it will ask some
  questions. Just select next until it gives you
  and option to finish.
• Now we have to setup the proxy setting and the
  home page.
• This done by going to Edit and selecting
  preferences.

Bring up the Netscape Preference. Then single

Use Disk Defragmenter

• This un-fragments file on your hard drive.
• Fragmented files can slow down a computer.
• This is run from start-gtprograms-gtaccessories-gtsys
  tem tools-gtDisk Defragmenter.

Running Disk Defragmenter
Click on the start button. Then after
Defragmenter determines the fragmentation of the
hard drive it will give a suggestion. Then
there is an option to see details, which gives a
person and idea of what defrag is doing.

Manage Virtual Memory

• This is done by right clicking on My Computer,
  and selecting properties. Then select the
  Performance Tab, and then select virtual
  Memory.
• This can also be found under the Control Panel in
  the System icon.

Setting up Virtual Memory
Here you can free up some memory by selecting the
Let me specify my own virtual memory settings.
Set the minimum to the amount of physical memory
installed, and the maximum to no more than 2 ½
times the amount of physical memory installed.

• This is done through System Monitor, which is
  located at start-gtprograms-gtaccessories-gtsystem
  tools-gtSystem Monitor.
• This will let you check out all kinds of things
  with your computer.
