Basic Skills
  • Grip
  • Underhand vertical hits (how many in a row)
  • Overhand vertical hits
  • Combine both
  • Wall drill

Partner Skills
  • Partner up and simply volley back and forth using
    any method that they can to get it to there
    partner. Note no net is used yet
  • Using a net continue the same skill.
  • When they feel comfortable they should attempt to
    adjust there arm angle to strike to birdie in
    different directions towards there partner.

3 Important strikes in Badminton
  • Overhead clear
  • Overhead smash
  • Low serve

  • The birdie will be tossed up in the air and
    struck at an angle as to hit it deep into the
    opponents court.
  • The opponent should catch the birdie then toss it
    up him/herself and execute the overhead clear.
  • When comfortable the students should be able to
    do this back and forth with out stopping the
    rally.

  • Changing the environment
  • Returning the birdie with a clear (angles of the
    body)
  • Height of a good clear (string)
  • Cones for landing
  • Buckets to aim for

    help build skill level of the over head clear
    through transfer of learning.
  • Baseball (Throwing from the outfield)
  • Tennis (Sending a deep hit ball back across
    court)
  • Football (Quarterback throwing a deep pass)

Overhead Smash
  • A powerful overhead swing much like that of a
    professional tennis players serve.
  • Birdie is struck at about a 35 degree angle and
    should be un-returnable.
  • This can be a single person drill or a partner
    drill.

  • Pitching a ball at a downward angle
  • Smashing a ping pong ball in table tennis

  • This is a gentle strike barely clearing the net
    and landing past the opponents short serve line.
  • Serves should vary in angle and directions in
    which they land.
  • Just as the overhead smash, the court will be of
    use for this skill.

  • String 12 inches above net
  • Cones 12 inches past the short serve line
  • Visual objects help with aiming points
  • Modifications
  • Adjust the height of the string
  • Adjust height of the net
  • Move the cones accordingly

  • Under hand tosses of a baseball or softball
  • Pickle ball serves
