Year7 to Year 8 Transition
  • CHURCHILL COMMUNITY FOUNDATION SCHOOL SIXTH
    FORM CENTRE

2
Churchill KS3Information for Parents of Year 8
Sept 2009
  • Year 7 have been working within the new National
    Curriculum framework
  • They are completing a 2 year KS3
  • A change of emphasis towards employability skills
    and deep learning
  • The increasing focus upon value added from
KS2-KS4 no KS3 SATs for them!

3
Our intentions
  • To create a KS3 curriculum that offers-
  • A more challenging range of experience for the
majority of our students over Year 7 AND Year 8
  • A faster pace
  • Less repetition in the early stages of Year 7
  • A clearer focus upon students knowing where they
have come from and what they need to do to
    improve further

4
The outcomes
  • The condensed KS3 from three to two years in all
subject areas has shown positive impact upon
    achievement.
  • Student feedback is positive
  • The majority of students completing their KS3
SATS in English, Maths and Science in Year 8
however we are working to ensure that APP is
    robust for 2009/10

5
KS4 and Options
  • Your children will choose their GCSE Options next
    year.
  • Students will have 3 years to complete their GCSE
    courses
  • In most subject areas this extra time will be
used to enrich the curriculum and extend learning
    opportunities. E.g., Maths Work related
    learning.
  • In some subject areas the most able may be able
to take their GCSE in Year 10 and then complete
    another subject in Year 11.
  • The least able will benefit from additional time
to work at a more appropriate pace and
    consolidate their understanding.

6
Where are we now?
  • Year 7 are completing the first Year of their two
    year KS3.
  • They have made an excellent start at Churchill.
  • Year 8 is waiting for them.
  • GCSE Options process for Year 8 is firmly
    established
  • We are looking at how we assess and report on the
    development of thinking skills.
