Profiles in Courage
Later an award was made in honor of his book. The
award was appropriately titled The Profiles in
Courage Award.
  • JFK wrote Profiles in Courage during his first
year as a senator. The book consisted of profiles
of eight of his historical senatorial colleagues
(John Quincy Adams, Robert Taft, etc.). The book
    won Kennedy a Pulitzer Prize.

The Cuban
Missile
Crisis
  • Shortly after his inauguration, Kennedy permitted
a group of Cuban exiles to invade Cuba in an
attempt to overthrow the regime of Fidel Castro.
The invasion was a failure. In 1962 the Russians
began to install nuclear missiles in Cuba. When
this was discovered in October of 1962, Kennedy
imposed a quarantine on all offensive weapons
bound for Cuba. With the world on the brink of
nuclear war, the Russians backed down and agreed
to remove the missiles. Kennedy asserted that
both the Russians and Americans had a vital
interest in stopping the spread of nuclear
weapons and the arms race. To this end his
administration negotiated the test ban treaty of
    1963.

The Peace Corps
The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to
1960, when then Senator John F. Kennedy
challenged students at the University of Michigan
to serve their country in the cause of peace by
living and working in developing countries. From
that inspiration grew an agency of the federal
government devoted to world peace and friendship.

The Assassination
John F. Kennedy was shot and killed on November
22nd, 1963. He and his wife, Jacqueline, were in
a convertible car in a parade in Dallas, Texas.
Through many hearings it was discovered that Lee
Harvey Oswald was the assassin. However, there is
still much speculation over how many shooters
there really were.

On November 25th the funeral for John F. Kennedy
was held-- this was also John F. Kennedy Jr.s
third birthday. Hundreds of people attended the
funeral along with representatives from
ninety-two countries. It was televised and the
world watched as Jackie and her two children
mourned the death of their husband and father.
The most memorable moment was when John Jr.
stepped forward and saluted his fathers coffin.

The afternoon of November 22nd, the day of the
assassination, Vice President, Lyndon B. Johnson,
was sworn in as president. He was sworn in in the
presidential airplane. Jackie Kennedy was there
standing next to him. Both were still shocked and
devastated from the earlier events of that day.

Though he was only forty-six when he died, John
Fitzgerald Kennedy left his mark on American
history. Today many of his ideas live on. The
work he had done for civil rights had been picked
up by President Johnson and others after him. In
1964 the Civil Rights Bill was made into a law.
The Peace Corps continue to unite many countries
throughout the world, and we will be forever
grateful for his strong stand during the Cuban
Missile Crisis.
And the glow from that fire can truly light the
world. John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917-1963)
