History Standard
  • Students use materials drawn from the
    diversity of human experience to analyze and
    interpret significant events, patterns, and
    themes in the history of Ohio, the United States,
    and the world.

  • Have children write a story about being a
    leprechaun on the first St. Patricks Day
    celebration.
  • Have children read Lets Celebrate St. Patricks
    Day by Peter Roop, and make a list of traditions
    mentioned.
  • Have children compare and contrast the traditions
    in the book from that of the children's
    traditions.
  • Have children research how/why the shamrock
    become the symbol of St. Patricks Day. Provide
    research materials for in-class work and
    encourage research at home as well. (Library with
    parents, etc.)
  • Have children arrange the U.S. holidays in
    chronological order. Have them make a timeline so
    they have visual representation of where St.
    Patricks Day falls in regards to the other
    holidays.

Geography Standard
  • Students use knowledge of geographic

Geography Activities
  • Locate Ireland on the world map and show its
    proximity to where we live in Ohio. Also, compare
    the size of the countries to show how small
    Ireland is compared to the United States.
    Emphasize the directions on the map we would have
    to move to find Ireland from the United States on
    a map. (Left, Right, Near, Far etc.)
  • Learn about Irelands flag. Talk about the
    significance of the colors in the flag. (Orange,
    White and Green.
  • Show pictures of Ireland, housing, animals,
    schools, buildings, jobs etc to explain the
    community, people and lifestyle in another
    country.
  • Take shoe boxes brought from home, and create a
    model of what a typical plot of land would look
    like for a school, home, farm etc. with clay,
    popsicle sticks and so on to create a model.
  • Create a class Venn Diagram to discuss what our
    culture and Irish culture have in common by ways
    of food, clothing, shelter, transportation and
    recreational activities.

    hunt
  • Estimation game estimate how many clovers are in
    jar
  • Have a bake sale with St. Patricks Day cookies.
    Allow the students to learn how to sell products.
  • Barter day teach the children that there are
    different ways to buy food. Divide the class into
    three groups. Each group will have different
    trade baking clover cookies, making green bead
    necklaces, and making green top hats. Allow the
    children to barter with one another to attain the
    different merchandise.

    Patricks Day hat. Learn about voting to make
    decisions by voting on the best hat.
  • Learn about the different believes of St.
    Patrick. Setup a debate to argue which myths are
    true and which are not.
  • Design a list of rules that would have existed in
    the days that St. Patrick lived in.
  • Have a St. Patricks Day party and have the
    children design a party committee where each
    student is in charge of a specific part of
    planning.

Activities
  • Discuss the flag of Ireland and create a class
    flag to signify their own sense of community.
  • Explain how St. Patrick drove the bad out of
    Ireland and have a re-enactment through a game!
  • After playing the game apply this concept to the
    classroom and talk about things that need can be
    taken out of the classroom (Driving the bad
    out.) Come up with rules and reminders and post
    them in the classroom.
  • Have the students come up with rewards and
    consequences of certain behaviors used in the
    classroom. Post the list in the classroom.
  • Break the students into groups and make posters
    with positive slogans for getting the bad out
    of the classroom. (i.e. We do our best work!)

  • Create a flyer about their St. Patricks Day
    Parade conducted by the class.
  • Invite some students from a local Irish Dance
    School (Celtic Academy) and have students perform
    some of the things they learn.
  • Discuss the different symbols of St. Patricks
    Day and have small groups of students create one
    and put it on display!
  • Have the students use their symbols, crafts, and
    dance in a St. Patricks Day Class Parade through
    the schools hall.
