Prairies
  • Wet Prairies- These prairies have the most
biodiversity of any type of prairie. This type of
prairie is called a wet prairie because if the
lake or body of water closest to it floods then
the prairie is filled with water and becomes a
    wetland.
  • Sand Prairies- These prairies can be moist or
dry, and their landscape is either flat or
slightly hilly from old sand dunes. They usually
occur near current or former bodies of water,
including extinct glacial lakes, Lake Michigan,
and the drainage basins of the Illinois and
    Mississippi Rivers.

4
Marshes
  • A marsh is characterized by an abundance of
reeds, rushes and cattails and is generally
treeless and open. The plants grow with their
stems partly in and partly out of the water.
Marshes can be shallow (6" of water) or deep
    (2-3' of water).

5
Bogs
  • A bog is a standing body of water with no
underground spring of fresh water to feed it. The
water is generally cold, extremely acidic and low
in oxygen. A form of moss, especially Sphagnum
moss can be seen floating on the water.

Conclusion
  • Prairies, Marshes, and Bogs are important
parts of our environment and so are the plants
that live there. They create biodiversity and
keep our planet a great place to live.
