1
10 Most Common Resume Mistakes
  • Bob Uda
  • SSM 445 Career Development

2
Mistake 1
  • Writing your resume to sound like a series of job
    descriptions
  • Give reader an idea of what youve done
    throughout your career
  • Do not focus on duties and responsibilities
  • List accomplishments and quantifiable facts
  • Saying you caused 10 percent growth in sales
is more impressive than saying you managed a
    sales team

3
Mistake 2
  • Writing in the first person
  • Your resume is not a personal correspondence
  • It should not include words such as I, my,
    and me
  • Save the first person pronouns for your cover
    letter

4
Mistake 3
  • Including unrelated and personal information
  • You do not have much room on your resume
  • So, why take up valuable space with information
unrelated to the position you are seeking
  • Leave out details about personal life, marital
    status, hobbies, and other interests

5
Mistake 4
  • Using passive language or no action words
  • Your resume needs to make a bold, strong
    statement
  • The best way to do that is by using action words
    to describe your accomplishments
  • Words like coordinated, achieved, managed,
and implemented will splice up your resume
  • Makes it more interesting and relevant to the
    reader

6
Mistake 5
  • Repetitiveness
  • While using action words is important
  • It is also key to make sure you have variety in
    your resume
  • Dont pick a couple of words and stick with them
    throughout the entire document
  • Break out a thesaurus if you are having trouble
coming up with new ways to say the same thing

7
Mistake 6
  • Poor formatting or formatting that is too flashy
  • While the most important part of your resume is
    the content
  • The documents overall look and feel is also
    important
  • Create a clean, polished looking document
  • Use consistent formatting for headings and
    bullet points
  • Stay clear from flashy formatting or
unconventional fonts or graphics unless you are
    seeking a highly creative position
  • Keep your resume simple, bold, and professional

8
Mistake 7
  • Sending a resume without a cover letter
  • One of the worst things you can do is send a
great resume without an official introduction
  • Resumes and cover letters should be inseparable
  • Make sure you dont forfeit really selling
    yourself with a cover letter

9
Mistake 8
  • Sending an unfocused or generic resume
  • While your past experience does not change
depending on the job or industry you are
    targeting
  • Your resume certainly should change
  • If you are seeking a sales position, your resume
would be different than one for a management job
  • Write to what you are seeking
  • Make it easy for the reader to see why you are a
    good fit

10
Mistake 9
  • Typos and other spelling or grammatical errors
  • Before you send out your resume, make sure you
    have proofread it several times
  • If a typo or misspelling is found, most hiring
managers wont give a resume a second look
  • They will automatically toss it

11
Mistake 10
  • Sending your resume to a nameless, faceless
    person
  • Want your resume to get thrown out with the
    recycling bin?
  • Just send it to the companys Hiring Manager
or To Whom It May Concern
  • Find a real person at the company who is
responsible for hiring in the department you are
    targeting
  • This is the first and most helpful step to
getting your foot in the door

12
Conclusion
  • Good resume writing is an art, not a science
  • There are certain rules you must follow to
    prepare an effective resume
  • A resume is a sales document
  • Its only purpose is to get you interviews
  • A good resume is one that generates phone calls
    for interview appointments
