What is Evangelism?
3
Evangelism isnt
  • The job of evangelists
  • Ambushing the unsuspecting
  • Knocking on doors
  • Telling others what you believe
  • Inviting others to your church
  • Disseminating information about Christ
  • Pressuring the Unwilling

4
For whoever wants to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for me and for the
gospel will save it. Mark 835
The disciples were even more amazed, and said to
each other, Who then can be saved? Mark 1026
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved,
but whoever does not believe will be
condemned. Mark 1616

Those along the path are the ones who hear, and
then the devil comes and takes away the word from
their hearts, so that they may not believe and be
saved. Luke 812
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what
was lost. Luke 1910
For God did not send his Son into the world to
condemn the world, but to save the world through
him. John 317

And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord
will be saved. Acts 221
With many other words he warned them and he
pleaded with them, Save yourselves from this
corrupt generation. Acts 240
praising God and enjoying the favor of all the
people. And the Lord added to their number daily
those who were being saved. Acts 247
7
He will bring you a message through which you
and all your household will be saved. Acts 1114
He then brought them out and asked, Sirs, what
must I do to be saved? They replied, Believe
in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved-- you
and your household. Acts 1630-31

Save Rescue
10
Evangelism
It is a message about a rescue, so there is a
sense of urgency in the message!
11
Evangelism assumes
  • There is something to get out of.

My congregation would be stunned to hear a
sermon on hell...My parishoners are upper-middle
class, well-educated critical thinkers who view
God as compassionate and loving, not someone
whos going to push them into eternal
damnation. The Rev. Mary Kraus Pastor of
Dumbarton United Methodist Church, Washington,
D.C.
12
Evangelism assumes
  • There is something to get out of.

Hell is part of an understanding of the cosmos
that just does exist anymore. Stephen J.
Patterson Professor of New Testament Eden
Theological Seminary, St. Louis
13
Evangelism assumes
  • There is something to get out of.

The main concern is retribution in this
life. The hottest fires of hell probably burn in
the human heart, in the harmful ways we treat
others. Barry Kogan, Professor of
Philosophy Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati
14
Evangelism assumes
  • There is something to get out of.

Hell is there and ready to receive anyone who
meets the condition for falling into it, but its
quite possible that no one will really go
there. The Rev. Avery Dulles, Catholic
Theologian Fordham University, New York
15
Evangelism assumes
  • There is something to get out of.

Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth
will awake some to everlasting life, others to
shame and everlasting contempt. The Prophet
Daniel Daniel 122
16
Evangelism assumes
  • There is something to get out of.

It is better for you to enter life maimed or
crippled than to have two hands or two feet and
be thrown into eternal fire. Jesus Matthew 188
17
Evangelism assumes
  • There is something to get out of.

They will be punished with everlasting
destruction... The Apostle Paul 2 Thessalonians
19
18
Evangelism assumes
  • There is something to get out of.

And the smoke of their torment rises forever
and ever... The Apostle John Revelation 1411
19
Evangelism assumes
  • There is something to get out of.

Damnation is without direction or purpose.
Why? Because it has nothing to do, and all
eternity to do it in. Dorothy Sayers Author
20
Evangelism assumes
  • There is something to get out of.
  • There is a way out.
  • A person must choose to take it.

Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue,
trying to persuade Jews and Greeks. Acts 184
Then Agrippa said to Paul, Do you think that in
such a short time you can persuade me to be a
Christian? Short time or long--I pray God that
not only you but all who are listening to me
today may become what I am, except for these
chains. Acts 2628-29
Since, then, we know what it is to fear the
Lord, we try to persuade men. What we are is
plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your
conscience. 2 Cor. 511

Why evangelize? Not because we have compassion
on lost people. Not because we are passionate
about our salvation... But because we are
commanded to do so.
32
Observations
1. What believers are to do We are to follow
Christ. The idea isnt just to imitate or learn
from Him but to follow His leading.
2. What Christ will do He intends to use us
to reach people.
3. What He isnt doing He isnt asking. So if
you arent really interested in fishing for
people, you are really following Christ.
33
Summary of Mark 1 Jesus intends his followers
to learn how to deliberately bring people into
the Kingdom of God.

35
Observations
1. The command is to make disciples.
2. There are three participles one acting as a
command, two explaining the means.
3. The command is directed to disciples, who
are to make more disciples who are obedient, and
so do what Jesus says, which is to make disciples.
36
Observations
4. The extent of the assignment is all
nations. As long as there are people who
havent heard, the assignment remains.
5. The time limit emphasizes that the task wont
be completed until the end of the age.
6. Christ and His authority is with us in this
task always.
37
Summary of Matthew 28 With the authority of
Heaven behind us and Christs presence with us,
we believers are to aggressively help people
become public, obedient followers of Christ.

believes but is not baptized 2) whoever does not
believe but is baptized
40

orchestrated plan.
2. The message is that the Christ will die and
be raised from the dead.
3. The result is forgiveness of sins.
4. The response is repentance.
5. The recipient of the message is to be all
nations.
6. The ability to accomplish this task will
come from the Holy Spirit.
43

Scriptures and have received Gods Spirit, we are
to proclaim the Good News to the world in
fulfillment of Gods plan.

45
Observations
1. Jesus never envisioned evangelism apart from
the Holy Spirits involvement.
2. Jesus did not delegate the task, but included
us in the task He was continuing.
3. You will be my witnesses is as much
command as prediction. He defines not only what
we do, but what we are.
46
Summary of Acts 1 Evangelism requires our
dependence upon the Holy Spirit and personal
experience of Christ.

Leaving the next day, we reached Caesarea and
stayed at the house of Philip the
evangelist Acts 218
And for this purpose I was appointed a herald
and an apostle--I am telling the truth, I m not
lying--and a teacher of the true faith to the
Gentiles. 1 Timothy 27
And of this Gospel, I as appointed a herald and
an apostle and a teacher. 2 Timothy 45
49
But you, keep your head in all situations,
endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist,
discharge all the duties of your ministry. 2
Timothy 45
It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to
be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to
be pastors and teachers, to prepare Gods people
for works of service, so that the body of Christ
may be built up Ephesians 411-12

And Saul was there, giving approval to
(Stephens) death. On that day a great
persecution broke out against the church at
Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were
scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. Godly
men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him.
But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from
house to house, he dragged off men and women and
put them in prison. Those who had been scattered
preached the word wherever they went. Acts 81-4
52
The Lords message rang out from you not only in
Macedonia and Achaia your faith in God has
become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need
to say anything about it, for they themselves
report what kind of reception you gave us. They
tell how you turned to God from idols to serve
the living and true God, and to wait for his
Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead
Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath. 1
Thess. 18-10
53
So if the whole church comes together and
everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not
understand or some unbelievers come in, will they
not say that you are out of your mind? But if an
unbeliever or someone who does not understand
comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will
be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will
be judged by all, and the secrets of his heart
will be laid bare. So he will fall down and
worship God, exclaiming, God is really among
you! 1 Cor. 1423-25
54
Some Conclusions
1. There is a divine rescue operation underway
at the present.
2. God is either enlisting or targeting you.
3. If you are a believer, you are a witness.
4. Other gifted individuals can be a model,
mentor, and encouragement to you.
5. You arent alone. Your church should be one
through which God can be seen and heard.
