Member Course Information Seamanship is the
recommended first course for members. It expands
on topics from the boating course and adds hull
design and performance, responsibilities of the
skipper, boating under normal, abnormal and
emergency conditions, nautical customs and
courtesy. Piloting introduces you to the
fundamentals of piloting and positioning -- the
study of marine charts, aids to navigation,
adjustment and use of the marine compass, dead
reckoning, plotting courses and taking bearings
to determine your on-the-water position.
Advanced Piloting adds skills in tidal and tidal
current prediction and their impact on your
position, advanced positioning techniques and the
use of electronic navigation systems for position
and course planning. Celestial Navigation (in
two parts Junior Navigation and Navigation)
prepares the navigator for off shore voyages. Use
and care of the sextant for sight taking, sight
reduction methods using the nautical almanac and
using this data to determine your position out of
sight of land are taught in these
courses. Elective Courses in Cruise Planning,
Weather, Marine Electronics, Engine Maintenance,
Sailing and Instructor Development are also
available.

The Squadron Boating Course is a traditional
civic service of the United States Power
Squadrons organization.  Since 1914 local
squadrons have presented the course to anyone who
wished to attend - to date more than 3 million
people.  Learning to boat safely is important
and the increased knowledge will enhance your
safety on the water and your enjoyment of the
sport. Designed to be useful to all boaters,
from the fisherman in an outboard to the skipper
of a large cruiser or sailboat.  All boaters are
subject to nautical rules and regulations.
Skippers should learn and respect traditional
boating courtesies.  The courses are meant to be
of interest to the entire family older children
are welcome.  We encourage your family to attend
as a group. The Squadron Boating Course covers
additional topics such as an introduction to
reading charts and plotting courses that are not
in Boat Smart.

Boat Smart is a course for all boaters (the pwc
operator the hunter or fisherman operating an
outboard utility boat the skipper of a family
cruiser the sailing enthusiast).  All boaters
must follow the same nautical rules, regulations
and courtesies of the sea. All are subject to the
same forces of nature while boating. As boating
is often a family activity, the course is of
value to all members of a boating family.  USPS
encourages families to attend as groups.
Qualified, enthusiastic, and experienced USPS
instructors provide instruction as a civic
service.  There is never a charge for
instruction the only costs are those for
materials, plus overhead costs such as classroom
rental, shipping and handling, sales tax, etc.
While the content of this student manual serves
as the basis for this course, it will also serve
as a reference book in basic boating long after
the course work is completed.  The course meets
the educational standards of the National
Association of State Boating Law Administrators
and features a proctored examination as required
by many states and insurance companies.  The
course will provide instruction and examination
for laws and regulations of state and local
authorities in the area where the course is
taught.

Chart Smart is a course for all USPS Boat Smart
Course or America's Boating Course (ABC)
graduates who are interested in information on
compasses, charts, and plotting courses.  It
builds upon the knowledge gained in Boat Smart or
America's Boating Course by covering subjects
typically introduced in the The Squadron Boating
Course Mariner's Compass Charts Aids to
Navigation Plotting a Course Distance, Speed,
Time Determining Position The purpose of Chart
Smart is to teach the techniques to determine
position when you are within the sight or near
proximity of land.  This course is designed to
give the student an introduction to the subject
known as Piloting.  Chart Smart is a
continuation of boating education, and hopefully
will encourage students to join USPS  to follow
this brief and basic course with additional
boating education such as the courses offered to
members of the United States Power Squadrons.

  • America's Boating Course (ABC) is a joint effort
between the United States Power Squadrons and
the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.  This
course is predominantly a home study course for
individuals who cannot attend USPS's traditional
class room courses, The Squadron Boating Course
or the Boat Smart course, or a USCG-A course.
  • ABC includes an interactive computer CD-ROM which
serves as a "virtual" instructor with audio and
video clips.  Most states recognize ABC as
meeting their education requirements. The course
material covers seven chapters, which touch on
  • General information about boats and maintenance
  • Information to make your boating experience
    safer and more comfortable
  • Tips on being a more courteous boat operator
  • Laws and regulations to which you must adhere
  • The purpose of America's Boating Course is to
teach introductory safe boating techniques.  As
an introductory course, ABC does not cover such
topics as the use of a nautical compass or the
techniques of plotting courses.  These subjects,
and more, are covered in the USPS course Chart
Smart it builds upon the knowledge gained in ABC
by covering the additional subjects of  the
Mariner's Compass Charts Aids to Navigation
Plotting a Course Distance, Speed and Time and
    Determining Position.
