Project I.D.E.A.A School Health Initiative in
your School
  • Project Overview
  • Teachers develop and implement health related
    inquiry activities/investigations in their
    classroom.
  • Teachers design and conduct an inquiry
    investigation in the Human Performance Lab.
  • Teachers learn content on nutrition, exercise,
    and anatomy.
  • Students collect baseline health related data
    that is submitted to a central database at SCSU.
  • Students conduct an 8 week inquiry investigation
    to see effects on baseline data.
  • Students have access to database for classroom
    analysis projects.
  • Students plan and participate in a School Health
    Fair

Rationale/Need
  • Obesity, a key risk factor for heart disease, has
    tripled among the nations youth in the past 15
    years.
  • The American Heart Association recently published
    a report and guidelines for preventing cardiac
    disease in children.
  • Schools can model healthy lifestyles through the
    science curriculum, promoting fitness and
    providing healthy diet choices.
  • Emphasis can be placed a Health Initiative.

Project IDEA Goals
  • Science, health, and physical ed. teachers
    receive specific content material on diet,
    fitness, and anatomy during summer institute.

    develop and implement relevant health related
    activities in their classrooms.
  • Data collected from the activities and
    investigations are recorded in a central database
    for analysis opportunities for interested student
    researchers.
  • Students participate in school wide health
    fair/initiative.

Project IDEA Activities

    Project IDEA activities.
  • These activities can be completed by students in
    a variety of classes, promoting interdisciplinary
    collaboration between teachers/classes.
  • Activities can be blended into the existing
    curriculum.

Why Walk a Mile?
  • Students collect data on their general fitness by
    completing a one mile walk and calculating their
    maximum volume of oxygen.

Diet Analysis
  • Students complete a comprehensive diet analysis.
  • Foodworks software is utilized to report on
    dietary intake.

Body Composition
  • Students study the importance of body composition
    in relationship to personal health.
  • Students calculate their Body Mass Index (BMI).

  • Students complete a stress survey
  • Students learn about simple coping strategies for
    dealing with stress.

Personal Health Profile
  • Students complete a personal health profile
    questionaire.
  • Heart disease, cancer, and stroke are often
    caused by poor lifestyle choices, including poor
    diet and lack of exercise.

  • Students record resting and recovery heart rates
    and blood pressure.
  • Students learn about the rising numbers of
    children with heart disease.

  • Students measure their flexibility.
  • Students learn the importance of maintaining good

Whats Your Sleep Number?
  • Students conduct a sleep log for seven days to
    establish their sleep patterns.
  • Students learn about the importance of sleep for
    maintaining a healthy body and mind.

Central Database
  • St. Cloud State University has established a
    website that is designed to collect student
    baseline data from the investigations.
  • Students participating will have the opportunity
    to access and analyze data from the database.
  • Preset Program Wizards will be established to run
    pre-determined statistics on selected data.

8 Week Inquiry Investigations
  • Project I.D.E.A. has three official
    Investigations that students can participate in
    after completing some or all of the baseline data
    activities.
  • Students who choose not to conduct the official
    I.D.E.A. investigations will have options to
    design their own investigations.
  • These investigations can be included in the
    school health initiative by challenging students
    to improve their fitness level and nutrition
    choices.
