Title: The Flag of the United States of America

1
The Flag of the United States of America
  • Stars
  • And
  • Stripes
  • Forever!

2
Our Flag
  • The flag of the United States today has 13
stripes- 7 red and 6 white- and 50 white stars on
a blue field- five rows of 6 and 4 rows of 5.
  • The stripes remind us of the 13 colonies that
gained us our liberty. The stars represent the
states that are bound together into one country.

3
The US Flag on Independence Day, 1776
  • The flag of the newly independent United States
of America, was first flown on Independence Day
    1776.
  • It was called the Continental Union flag.

4
The First Official Flag of the United States
  • On June 14, 1777, Congress adopted a new flag.
  • This new flag would have 13 stars, for the 13
colonies, and thirteen red and white alternating
    stripes.
  • It was designed by Francis Hopkinson.

5
The Betsy Ross Flag
  • The Betsy Ross flag is one of the most famous of
    the US flags.
  • Betsy Ross family claims that she was the
creator of the first US flag.
  • Both Ross and Hopkinsons flags are proud
    symbols of our young nation.

6
The Stars
  • On April 4, 1818, President Monroe made a law
where a star would be given for each new state
    that came into the union.
  • At this point in time the flag had 20 stars, and
was know as the Flag of 1818.

7
Our Flag Today
  • The flag that we know and salute today was
finalized on August 21, 1959, by President
    Eisenhower.
  • An executive order signed by him gave the flag
the design that we see today.

8
The Pledge of Allegiance
  • When you pledge allegiance to the flag you
promise loyalty and devotion to your nation.
Each word has a deep meaning.
  • I pledge allegiance- I promise to be true
  • To the flag- to the sign of our country
  • Of the United States of America- a country made
up of 50 states, each with certain rights
  • and to the Republic- a country where the people
elect others to make laws for them
  • for which it stands-the flag means the country
  • one Nation under God- a single country whose
people believe in a supreme being
  • indivisible- the country cannot split into parts
  • with liberty and justice- with freedom and
    fairness
  • for all- for each person in the country.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United
States of America and to the Republic for which
it stands, one Nation under God, Indivisible,
with liberty and Justice for all.
