History
  • Jameson
  • Thought that an important factor in the arrival
of postmodernism was the upheavals of the 1960s,
when the assumed truths of the time where brought
into question and various experiments in
    offensive lifestyles and outlooks became
    prominent.
  • For example, the minorities and people in the
third world countries took up new identities on
    the sidelines of dominate countries.

Aims of Education
  • Giroux
  • Stresses that ethics must be a central concern to
    critical education, particularly the different
ethical discourses that offer student a richer
fund of meanings and help them relate to
    diversity in a wider society.
  • This enables students to understand how an
    individuals experience is influenced by
different ethical discourses and how ethical
relations are formed between the self an others,
    including others of different backgrounds,
    origin, and perspective.

5
Aims Cont.
  • The basic function of this process is to engage
students in social discourse that helps them
reject needless human suffering and exploitation
  • The purpose is to develop a social sense of
    responsibility for others, including those
considered outsiders on the margins of social
    life.

6
Aims
  • McLaren
  • Makes the point that education should result in
    self- and social empowerment.

in social and technical knowledge before they can
    become effective moral agents.
  • Main point is to commit student to social And
    self- transformation
  • .

Methods
  • Postmodernist note an aggressive conservatism
that has taken the initiative in education,
redefining the curriculum by waging the cultural
war in schools against liberal and leftist ideas.
  • Postmodernist reject distinctions between high
and low culture and maintain that the popular
culture ( such as entertainment media, popular
novels, and rock music) is disserving of study.

8
Methods
  • Postmodernist spurn intellectual elites who set
themselves above history and attempt get it
right for the rest of the people.

9
Curriculum
  • From the Postmodernist critical perspectives, the
issue is not simply an argument for or against a
curriculum composed of established canons of
knowledge, but one that remakes the meanings and
    use of canons of knowledge.

10
Role of the Teacher
  • Postmodernist call for a critical pedagogy that
views teachers as cultural workers who are
    transformative intellectuals occupying special
    political and social roles.
  • Postmodernist want to define the role of the
teacher as cultural workers who produce more
    appropriate social ideologies and practices.
  • Also that students should become critical and
    responsible members of a democracy.
