Title: Internet Safety

1
Internet Safety
  • Staying Safe On-Line

2
Internet safety
  • Never arrange to meet anyone in person that you
    meet online
  • Never give out personal information (such as your
school, grade, address, phone number, and age)
  • Things on the Internet are usually not what they
    seem.

3
Food for thought
  • A study conducted by the National Center for
Missing and Exploited Children found that 1 in 4
children between the ages of 10 and 17 have been
exposed to unwanted sexual material online.

Internet horror stories
  • Eric Rice, 16 years old, lived in the small town
of Muncie IN. At school, Eric was the focus of
taunts from his peers. The one place he had to
escape to was the Internet. He spent hours in
chat-rooms where he made several friends. Eric
made arrangements to meet one of them, a 15 year
old girl, at a local restaurant without telling
his parents. She turned out to be a 52 year old
    manwho seriously assaulted Eric.

5
Internet horror stories
  • Christina Long, 15, from Danbury CT. attended a
private school. The 9th-grader made good grades,
led the cheerleading squad and involved in church
activities. On the Internet, she used provocative
    screen names.
  • Christina was strangled by a 25 year-old man
that she met the Internet and later decided to
    meet with personally.
  • He confessed to the murder and led police to her
body in a remote ravine in Greenwich.

6
  • We all know the Internet can be a fun place, but
remember the it can also be a dangerous place.
What sounds too good to be true, probably is.
Use good judgment and never meet anyone in person
that you have chatted with Online.
