NMU has been combating high natural prices
  • NMU has always purchased natural gas
competitively through a bidding process prior to
    deregulation of the industry.
  • With the deregulation of the natural gas industry
NMU has taken advantage of the opportunity to
purchase natural gas on the futures market.
  • NMU has avoided a total of 3.2M of costs over
the last six years by buying on the futures
market or from the LDC when advantages were
    available.
  • NMU has peen participating with the State of
    Michigan Purchasing Cooperative initiative since
    2002.

15
Energy efficiency options and renewable resource
opportunities
  • NMU is replacing two 40 year old existing
boilers that will bolster our firm capacity and
also result in a 125,000/year cost avoidance.
  • NMU is pursuing the addition to the heating plant
of a cogeneration solid fuel high pressure
boiler and steam turbine to facilitate more
    efficient utilization of thermal energy.
  • The system will be capable of burning wood chips
(renewable resource), natural gas, oil, and coal
meeting EPA standards now and well into the
    future

16
Energy efficiency options and renewable resource
opportunities(continued)
  • The system will reduce the campus utility costs
by 600,000 to 1.2M per year depending on the
    mix of fuel.
  • The system could create renewable resource
related employment in the Upper Peninsula,
Northern Lower Michigan, and Northern Wisconsin.

17
What can all of us do to help reduce utility
costs ?
