Minimum Technology Requirements and Skills
  • Easy access to a computer (IBM or compatible with
    Pentium 4 processor recommended or an iMac
  • Internet access either via 56K modem and phone
    line or a direct network connection (i.e. DSL.
  • Web Browser (Internet Explorer 6 or Netscape 7.2)
    AOL requires the most recent version however,
    AOL is not recommended.
  • Access to required software programs.
  • At this time, Blackboard is not compatible with
    the use of Internet Explorer 7 (IE7), Microsoft
    VISTA, or Microsoft Office 2007.

Minimum Technology Requirements and Skills
  • Microsoft Office
  • Access to Campus Cruiser e-mail service (which
    RCCC has provided).
  • An alternate plan for Internet access. The
    Learning Resources Center (LRC) and
    Computer-Assisted Instruction Lab computers are
    available for your use.
  • Basic computer skills.

How to Get Started
  • The first day of class is August 20, 2007. All
    students taking distance learning courses must
    individually complete the Orientation for
    Internet-Based Courses online then complete the
    Week 1 assignments as instructed in your online
    class no later than Monday, August 27, 2007.
  • For courses beginning October 18, 2007, students
    must individually complete the Orientation for
    Internet-Based Courses online then complete the
    Week 1 assignments as instructed in your online
    class no later than no later than Friday, October
    26, 2007.

How to Get Started (contd.)
  • Blackboard is the software that hosts RCCCs
    online courses. All 100 online and hybrid
    courses will be taught in Blackboard.
  • Log into Blackboard by accessing the direct link
  • http//disted.roanokechowan.edu

Welcome Screen
Click on the User Login button and the screen
changes to a screen similar to the screen above.

Login Screen New Instructions
Enter your first name, period, last name as your
username (all lowercase, no spaces). For example
Matilda Lawson would use the Username
Matilda.Lawson The password will be your birth
date in all digits (MMDDYY). For example
January 10, 1080 would be 011080 If it does not
go through, try (MMYY). In this case, the
password would be 0180

changes to a page with links to your online

You will see links to your online courses on the
right of the screen. Click the links and begin.

Announcements will be in the middle of the
screen. Notice the View Tabs at the top of the

Buttons or text to your left are links where
information is kept. Click on each button to read
the contents.

The Syllabus and the Course Information buttons
will have course objectives, schedules, content,
and instructions on how to complete the course.
Read each one carefully.

may also contain quizzes and tests. This depends
on how the course is set up by the instructor.

The Discussion Board and Communication buttons
will have access to features for communicating
with the instructor and other students. It is
important to complete the assignments in the
Discussion Board in Week 1 to gain initial class

The Staff or Faculty Information button will have
the instructors contact information and office
hours. Note that office hours may be online only.

The Tools button will give access to the digital
drop box (if used) and to your grades.
Tips on Taking Tests
  • Tests are usually found in a link under
    Assignments, but be aware that instructors may
    place them in other places as well. Your
    instructor will tell you where to find the tests.
  • Do not open a test until you are ready to take
    it! Many online tests are timed and many are
    only accessible one time!
  • If you need to get back into a test, contact the
    instructor immediately. It is up to the
    instructor to reset the test online.

Tips on Taking Tests (contd.)
  • Prepare to take tests during a time with limited
    interruptions. Do not wait until the deadline to
    begin your test!
  • Pay attention - tests may be timed, and some
    tests may not allow students to revisit
    previously answered questions.
  • Your grade can be found by clicking the link to
    My Grades under the Tools button.

Tips for Success!
  • Start your class on time, keep up, pay attention
    to due dates, and plan on submitting work weekly.
  • Check your course and email every day for new
  • Take responsibility for your own learning and for
    your own work!
  • Be an explorer and read to learn, not just to
    memorize facts for exams.

More Tips
  • Be persistent and READ, READ, READ!
  • Spend a minimum of 3-6 hours per week to work on
    your course work. This includes reading the
    assigned text, researching, participating in
    discussion forums and group projects, and
    completing test and quizzes.
  • Acquire technical skills as soon as possible.
  • Always have a back-up plan for accessing your
  • Communicate online with your fellow students as
    much as possible in discussion forums and group
  • Communicate with your instructor if a problem
    arises and you cannot complete an assignment on
    time, or if you need help with the subject
  • Dont be afraid to ask questions!

How to Get Help
  • Contact the instructor for specific questions
    about anything regarding your course. Your
    instructors contact information is posted in
    your online course under Staff or Faculty
  • For all other problems, contact Seleeda Grantum,

    reached on campus in the LRC, or you may email

    get a 24-48 hour reply, call her at 252-862-1232.

    the bottom of the RCCC Home Page, or through the
    link on the RCCC Blackboard login screen.

  • Log into Blackboard.
  • Remember, your User Name is the first letter of
    your first name, the first letter of your middle
    name, and your last name, using all lower case
    letters. Your Password is the last 4 digits of
    your Social Security Number. If this does not
    work, try again. If your log in still does not
    work, email the DE Coordinator for assistance.
  • Feel free to review this online orientation as
    many times as you want! It will always be posted
    on the Bb Login page.
