Preparation
  • Staging your equipment and materials is the most
    important aspect of preparation.
  • You need scaffolding to create a safe platform
from which to work and a ridge hook which fits
over the rung of your ladder and over the ridge
    of the roof.
  • When doing work on slate, you cant walk on the
slate. You need a slate hook to balance your
weight. If you have never worked on a slate
roof, you should strongly consider hiring a
    professional.
  • Slate is sharp. Always wear gloves when working
    with slate.

3
Under the Slate or Shingles
  • Use a rubber membrane over the sheathing and
underneath the roofing material. Rubber is
particularly effective on a flat roof, as on a
porch, that abuts a slate roof.
  • Cut a piece of rubber to size.
  • Prepare the surface. It needs to be smooth.
  • Apply adhesive to one side of the rubber and on
    the surface, and adhere together.
  • If the piece of rubber is large, fold it in half,
apply glue to one half, adhere that side to the
surface. Then fold back the other side, brush on
    glue and adhere.
  • Make sure the sheathing and underlying materials
are stable before putting the slate on. If the
underlying materials are unstable, the slate will
    be unstable.

4
Shields
  • Ice Water Shield roofing underlayments, from
GRACE Constuction Products, are applied in roof
valleys and along lower edges of shingle or slate
    roofs
  • For a gabled roof, you can purchase a shield that
has adhesive already applied. Peel off the
backing, press flat to adhere to rubber membrane
    or sheathing.
  • Graces Ice Water Shield underlayments are 30
inches wide. Apply the shield 2-3 courses above
the eave so that there is no chance of water
    seeping in.
  • You can also create a shield from a metal roof.
  • Put the lip of the metal roof along the eave
  • Fit the snowslide onto the groove of the lip,
    then crimp down.
  • Join up the seams on the side, interlocking
tightly. Use crimpers to crimp all the way down
    and back up.
  • Flatten the seam down about 6 inches from the top
and overlay with slate or shingles.
  • Ice Water Shield is a registered trademark of
    the W.R. Grace Co. corporation.

5
Replacing Slate
  • Always clean out underneath the slate
  • If possible, remove the old, broken slate
  • Overlap with existing slate by 2-3 inches
  • Use a slate hook.
  • Nail one end of the hook into the sheathing
  • Slide one end of the slate under the row above
where you want the new slate to be.
  • Let the slate drop down onto the hook.

6
Selecting Slate
  • Slate comes in a variety of sizes, colors and
    grades.
  • Slate is manufactured out of quarries from
    Virginia to Granville, Maine.
  • Pennsylvania slate is soft and not durable.
Harder slate can be found in Maine and Vermont
this slate has a lifespan of 100 to 150 years.
  • Different color slates have different durability.
  • If you see slate flaking, it is a sign that the
slate has about 3 to 4 more years left.
  • To see samples of different types and colors of
    slate, visit www.evergreenslate.com online.

7
Snow Guards
  • Snow Guards keep snow and ice from falling off.
  • Install them in a diagonal pattern on the bottom
    eave.
  • Install the snow guards by sliding one end up
    underneath the slate.

8
Missing Slates
  • Look for missing slates around chimneys, ridges,
    dormers.
  • If a slate is cracked above the gusset, that
    slate should be replaced.

9
Comparison of Cost
The costs of roofing materials will vary from
year to year and wi11 vary based on the
requirements of your specific product. Your
roofing contractor will provide you with a
specific estimate of costs for your project.

Hints and Tips
  • Best time to do work on a slate roof is in the
Spring or Fall. Slate gets very hot to handle in
    the Summer.
  • Have your roof checked once every year or so to
    determine maintenance or repair.
  • Only 1 in 10 slate roofs will ever need to be
fully replaced. If you maintain your slate roof
properly, it will last up to 150 years.
  • Mold build up on slate is a sign of moisture in
the attic. Clean the slate and improve the
ventilation in the attic. If uncorrected, over
time the lack of proper ventilation can cause
deterioration in the sheathing and rafters and
    eventual structural problems.
