• Students will create web documents using material
  from class. Each assignment will build on the
  previous work.
• Projects will be graded on how well they meet
  requirements, how well they function, code
  structure, and design.

• Midterm and Final exams - no notes or book.
• Homework 10 points x 6, Midterm, Final 20pts
  each
• Grading is based on preset parameters as well as
  on effort. Use critiques to improve.
• To do well, demonstrate your ideas, dont be
  afraid to try new things. Its only school!
• Inactivity is failure.

• Started 1960s - Packet Switching
• Research project by U.S. Department of Defense
• ARPAnet (Advanced Research Projects Agency)
• Really took off in 1993, why?

• CERN (Tim Berners-Lee) developed authoring
  language and distribution system for creating and
  sharing multimedia-enabled, integrated electronic
  documents over the Internet
• World Wide Web and HTML was born
• Allows relationships between documents and
  elements
• NCSA developed Mosaic to view these docs

World Wide Web

• The defining feature of the Web is its ability to
  connect documents to one another -- as well as to
  audio, video, and image files -- with hyperlinks.
• Before the Web, users had to type in the exact
  addresses or wade through a series of menus to
  get where they wanted to go.

• TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet
  Protocol)
• A protocol is set of rules describing how to
  transmit data.
• TCP translates the information so it can be sent
  from one computer to another. IP routes the
  information over the Internet to the requested
  web server machine
