  • Black History Month is a remembrance of
important people and events in the history of the
African Diaspora. It is celebrated once a year
    in Canada in February.

Who was Portia White?
  • One of the great contralto vocalists in the
history of Canadian classical music, Portia made
her debut on the national stage in Toronto in
1941. By 1944 she had made her international
    debut
  • in New York City and later toured the world.
When a rasp in her voice appeared it forced her
to retire, she settled in Toronto and taught some
of Canadas foremost pop singers of the day.
  • Portia White was asked to perform for Queen
Elizabeth II , at the opening of Confederation of
Arts  in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, in
1964. This was to be one of her last major
    concerts.

Biography!
  • Portia White was born in Truro, Nova Scotia in
1911, third child in a family of 11. Her father,
a Baptist minister, became the first black
graduate of Acadia University in 1906. The same
year he married Izie Dora White. After World War
I, the family moved to Halifax where her father
became the minister at Cornwallis Street Baptist
Church. Portia joined the choir at her father's
church when she was six years old, along with her
    brothers and sisters.

What did Portia White do for Canada?
  • Portia White is described as one of the greatest
vocalists in Canadian history and has been
    repeatedly compared to Philadelphia's Marian
    Anderson (1897 - 1993)
  • also a classical contralto, also black and
female. Except for the long life and thus the
lengthy career of Anderson, her story and that of
    Portia White's are remarkably similar.

7
What obstacles did Portia White face?
  • Portia White became the first Black Canadian
concert singer to win approval across North
    America, despite difficulties obtaining bookings
    because of her race.
  • Also following a tour in 1946 of Central and
South America, White found herself in vocal
difficulties as well as problems with her
    management.
