Title: Alysen's Engineers Without Borders Haiti trip.

1
Engineers without Borders UW Madison Chapter trip
to Bayonnaise, Haiti January 2010
2
Engineers Without BoardersUW Madison Chapter
  • There are professional chapters and student
    chapters around the world
  • Its a non-profit organization
  • Madison is currently part of five community
    projects
  • Domestic - Wisconsin
  • El Salvador
  • Haiti
  • Kenya
  • Rwanda

3
Engineers Without BoardersUW Madison Chapter
  • Madison has been a member of EWB since 2003
  • The Madison chapter has over 80 active members
and maintains a five-year commitment to five
communities. Making it the largest chapter of
Engineers without Boarders in the United States.

4
Organizations that Help
  • Madison partners with EWB-SF (the San Francisco
    Professional Chapter)
  • A church group from North Carolina (OFCB aka the
    World of God)
  • The UW team works with both groups in Haiti.

5
Projects by EWB in Bayonnais
  • They have constructed a three-span vehicular
    bridge over a large river
  • They have installed a photovoltaic solar power
system to provide electricity for the school and
    church
  • EWB-SF is currently working on designing a clinic
    for the Baynonnais area
  • The UW students did the surveying for the clinic
  • The current focus for the UW group is to design
and construct a hydro-electric power generation
facility to provide electricity for the clinic
    and other community buildings

6
  • While the UW students were in Haiti in June of
2009 doing some assessments and implementation
they found that severe flash flooding destroyed
the water pipe crossing leaving 20,000 people
without access to clean potable water.
  • To fix the problem the UW students designed a
cable suspension bridge that would raise the
water pipe over the river so that erosion would
    not effect it again.

7
  • There was some basic surveying done during the
June 2009 trip but it was not efficient enough
    for the design.
  • So the January 2010 trip (the one I was on) was
setup to obtain more survey data and to
temporarily repair the pipe until the UW team
could make it back out there to implement their
proposed design to permanently fix the water
    crossing

How did Alysen (thats me) get involved
  • I had never heard of the Engineers without
Boarders prior to this experience. Makes since
though theres Doctors without Boards so why not
    Engineers.
  • Glenn Schafer had sent out an email to all MASC
member asking if anyone was interested. And me
being the adventurous type wrote back do you
need an RLS (for I did not obtain my until
March). Glenn told me to contact Eyleen (shes
the President of EWB-UW). So I did.

10
How did Alysen (thats me) get involved
  • It turns out that was a fairly good candidate.
  • I had the survey experience needed
  • I have lived in no plumbing situations
  • I spoke some French (which is one of the
languages spoken by Haitians, most of them speak
Creole, which is a variation of French).
  • And I was able to travel on required dates

World of God
  • World of God is a church organization thats
    helps communities in extreme poverty.
  • WOG is the reason that EWB is in Bayonnaise Haiti
  • They needed electricity for the new church and
school that the church group was assisting in.
  • 5 members of WOG where in Haiti with us.
  • We coordinated our trip around theirs to save the
community time and money in travel expenses to
    come and pick us up.
