Examples of Courage from To Kill a Mocking
Bird.Mrs. Dubose is an example of courage
because she insisted on dying a painful death
instead of taking morphine, to which she was
addicted. Atticus wanted Jem to see what real
courage was.I wanted you to see what real
courage is instead of getting the idea that
courage is a man with a gun in his hand. Its
when you know that youre licked before you begin
anyway and see it through no matter what.

Atticus is a role model for his children, this is
evident when he takes on Tom Robinsons case. Tom
Robinson was a black man, who was accused of
attacking a white woman. Atticus knew Tom would
lose his case even though he was innocent because
of the system of segregation that existed in the
South at that time. Black people were victims of
extreme prejudice. Cry about the simple hell peo
ple give other people without even thinking.
Cry about the hell white people give coloured
folks, without even stopping to think that
theyre people, to. Atticus did not want his chi
ldren to catch Maycombs usual disease and
brought his children up to try and understand
other people. They
could do this by trying to understand what other
people were going through. We think Atticus is
an example of true courage because he did what he
thought was right and guided his children by his
good example.

Another example of courage in the novel is seen
in the actions of the character of Boo Radley.
Boo Radley was known as the town freak, nobody
had seen him for years. He didnt like to be
around other people because the world frightened
him so much. However, he saved Jem and Scout from
being killed by Bob Ewell. Boo was our neighbou
r. He gave us two soap dolls, a broken watch and
chain, a pair of good luck pennies, and our
lives. But neighbours give in return. We never
put back into the tree what we took out of it we
had given him nothing, and it made me sad.
Boo is an example of true courage because he did
something despite being very scared and he taught
Jem and Scout more about themselves.
