ROUTINES and RIGOR in AVID
KEYS TO SUCCESSFUL AVID IMPLEMENTATION

High Expectations!
38
We SOARed with AVID!
39
Flores Elementary
  • Principal Cleo Eddy
  • Assistant Principal Joshua King

40
Flores Elementary
  • 5th and 6th Grade campus
  • Approximately 650 students
  • 48 Teachers
  • 14 paraprofessionals
  • 18 Summer Institute trained personnel over a two
    year period

41
What is AVID Elementary at Flores?
  • Flores Elementary students use
  • AVID Binder,
  • Agenda,
  • 2-column, 3- column, and Cornell note taking
    strategies,
  • WICOR in all subjects

42
Mrs. Eddy, the campus principal, says.
  • The biggest impact that AVID has had on our
campus is organization, a skill that must be in
place in order to achieve academic success.

43
Flores Teachers say
  • I love AVID! I have at least 90 of homework
turned in each dayI have never had that before.
  • -6th grade teacher

I think the AVID program is the missing piece to
our instructional puzzle. The organizational
piece is what we have been missing. It ties all
of our other programs together. -5th grade
teacher
44
Avid Binder
45
Avid Binder
46
Our Students say
I think (the AVID binder) is a big help because
it is organized and it helps us stay organized
and it is big so we could put lots of things in
it. Celia, 5th grade
The AVID binder is really helpful because its
like your backpack. It holds all your things and
your desk wont be messy. Also you know where
you put things instead of the teacher giving you
a zero. Reagan, 5th grade
47
Our Students say
The binder is the thing that mainly helps me
because everything I need is in
there! -Monique, 6th grade
48
Agenda
49
Our Students say
  • My agenda is cool you get to write what youre
doing on weekends. My mom and dad always read
    and check it everyday.
  • -Sean, 5th grade
  • I really like the cool agendas because not only
are they for keeping track of school they help me
keep track of life. I like how there is a new
activity and spelling word each week.
  • -Sarah, 6th grade

50
Note-taking
51
Our Students say
  • I really like it (taking notes) because I can go
    over them later
  • -Dominik, 5th grade
  • I think it really helps me study for a test
better and faster. My favorite notes are the two
    column notes.
  • -Katelyn, 5th grade

52
Our Students say
  • I like it (note taking) because you have
questions and notes on different sides its more
    easier to understand.
  • -Karina, 5th grade

53
Successful Student
54
Our Students say
  • As for the successful student I thought that
showed originality in all of us but also taught
us what a successful student is.
  • -Sarah, 6th grade

55

63
Outcomes of SI 2008
  • Great relationship builder among the staff. (We
worked together, argued together, ate together,
    laughed together, agreed together.)
  • Conclusion reached that if AVID is so good, then
why arent we doing it for everyone?
  • All of Flores and Batesville 6th grade students
coming to 7th grade with AVID Elementary
    concepts and skills.
  • Developed the AVID Homeroom period in our
    schedule.
  • Where to put 8th ?

64
Structure of homeroom
  • Class Size 18 1 or less
  • At least one AVID student in each class.
  • Every day will have common script of activities.

65
Expectations of homeroom teachers
  • We are concerned with helping students learn and
utilize the AVID strategies and methodologies
used in the AVID classroom. This process will
take place briefly each day during the homeroom
class. These strategies will prepare students to
    participate in a rigorous college-prep
    curriculum.
  • The purpose of AVID is to restructure the
teaching methods of an entire school. Success
will be determined not only by the students
participation but also by the commitment of the
    teacher to the program.
  • AVID revolutionizes the way teachers teach in
    public school.
  • Scott Pelley, CBS 60 Minutes II

66
Expectations of homeroom students
  • The homeroom class will be used to put you on the
path to college by using the AVID program
strategies. In this class, you will learn
different ways to help you succeed in school. It
will also help with organization of your course
work by helping you with binder checks during
homeroom as well in your core classes. (Binders
are kept to organize your course work in a
    manageable order)
  • The AVID program provides a rigorous curriculum
to all students. The homeroom class will provide
this rigor in brief increments each day. Rigor
rigor is the goal of helping students develop
the capacity to understand content that is
    complex, ambiguous, provocative, and personally
    or emotionally challenging.
  • This class will give you an opportunity to learn
and use different ways of taking notes, having a
    group discussion, and completing projects.
  • AVID also provides an opportunity for tutors, if
needed. During homeroom these AVID tutors will be
    available for assistance.

  • Day trip
  • AM Kingsville and AM Corpus Christi
  • Over night trip
  • Del Rio Science Fair
  • Corn Maze
  • Love Ya Uvalde
  • AVID Toy Drive for CPS children

Day and overnight trips are taken to introduces
students to the college admission process.
84
The University of Incarnate Word
  • We had a great experience at the university and
learned that many of the students are involved
with extra-curricular activities. As we listened
to our tour guide discuss her own experiences, it
inspired us to want to be a part of that as well.

85
Trinity University The Witte Museum
  • Trinity had many options in degree plans school
and we found that very interesting. We all would
like to attend a college that gave us options.
  • We learned specifics about financial aid, student
    engagement, and life on campus.
  • After our campus tour, we visited the Witte
Museum. We got to experience many different
aspects of history and play in the tree house,
which had hands on science experiments and more!

86
AM Corpus Christi AM at Kingsville Trip
  • Our first overnight trip, taken to Corpus and
Kingsville, was very exciting for all of us who
    attended.

87
Touring the Campus AM at Kingsville
  • At Kingsville we were able to tour the art
gallery and view the artwork created by the
students. We also got to walk through an actual
art class and watch the students painting.
  • The campus was smaller than at Corpus but they
offered many great majors, especially for
engineers and they have a Pharmacy school on
    campus as well.

AVID Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors plus some GT
students. Enjoying a tour of the campus.
88
Touring the Campus AM at Corpus Christi
  • The campus was beautiful, we got to experience
what the weather was like on a windy day.
  • We were able to tour different buildings and were
able to see a lecture class in one of the larger
lecturer halls. We also go to tour the new rec.
    center and an on-campus apartment.
  • Along the side of the campus you have a great
view of the beach, What's not to like?

Avid Juniors-Eryn Walker Bianca Padilla AIVD

89
Science Fair in Del Rio, TX
  • At the science fair, there were several
demonstrations some of the students had the
chance to experience what it was like to evacuate
a house on fire, as well as what to do in that
situation. We were shown many science experiments
by MadScience and NASA had a live teleconference,
and demonstrated the satellite view of the world.
We were able to ask questions about NASA and
learn more about the careers that NASA offers.

90
Love Ya Uvalde Community Service Project
  • It was a great experience to be able to help
    people.
  • Many of went the evening before and helped
decorate, roll silverware, and prepare the
    turkey.
  • On the day of the dinner, we helped seat people,
served food, delivered meals to homes, and
    visited with the people there.
  • We learned that there is much more to life and we
became more appreciative after this event.

91
AVID Toy Drive Community Service Project
  • AVID the Athletics programs of UHS worked
together to collect over 400 toys and 200 to buy
    supplies for the Rainbow Room.
  • We collected enough toys for each child to
receive two toys for Christmas. Some of these
children might not have received anything if it
were not for this effort and we learned that
there are many children that arent as fortunate.
  • This was an eye opening project. We were thankful
that we were able to help in allowing the
children to have a better Christmas.
  • Mrs. Darden from CPS also came and spoke with us
about CPS, explained procedures, and helped us
develop a better understanding of this type of
    work.

92
AVID Homecoming Float Building Our AVID Family
  • AVID Students working on the homecoming float.
  • The students worked together to decorate the
float for their first time in the UHS Homecoming
    parade.
  • We had fun painting and decorating and getting to
    know one another better
