CAMHS Vision
  • No young people under the age of 16 will be on an
    adult psychiatric ward.
  • All children and young people with mental health
problems will be able to access emergency care 24
    hours a day.
  • All children and young people will be able to
access the services they need, across a range of
    needs.
  • Children and young people up to their 18th
birthday will have their mental health needs met
    by appropriate CAMHS.
  • All CAMHS have smooth transition arrangements
with adult mental health services in place.
  • Children and young people with mental health
needs will experience similar high standards of
care, no matter where they live.

8
Pushed into the Shadows
  • Inadequate response to crisis
  • Lack of information and planning
  • Nothing to do, no one to talk to
  • Lack of safety and security or therapeutic care
  • Disorganised discharge arrangements

9
Pushed into the shadows
  • End the use of adult wards for the treatment of
    under 18s
  • Address the national shortage of emergency beds
    in Tier 4 CAMHS
  • Development of alternatives to traditional
    in-patient provision
  • Having resources to do provide services up to
    18th birthday

10
Key Findings from National Work Developing
Services
  • Need to be more flexible - rigid age boundaries
    not helpful
  • Leadership Creation and Innovation
  • Partnership approach with good transition
protocols, AMH and CAMH commissioners working
    closely/multi-agency commissioning
  • Need to commission Needs Led services (not ones
    based on Historical provision)
  • Understanding the importance of commissioned
    voluntary sector

11
Key Findings from National Work Developing
Services
  • View the service and access to it from the
    perspective of a Young Person
  • Identify a local forum to take things forward
  • Accept neither CAMHS nor Adult MH have all the
    answers
  • Health needs to work in partnership with a wide
range of statutory agencies to design and deliver
services that young people want to engage with
  • Development of CAMHS/Adult MH training
opportunities and possibilities for joint working
