Online Sales Tax
  • By Darren Drake

2
Problem
Should there be sales tax for items that are
bought online? If yes, should there be a
different in different states?
3
Who Actually Pays Taxes?
  • Most companies try to avoid paying sales tax
  • If the site is in a specific state, that state
    must pay a sales tax
  • If the site is not in your state, then you dont
have to pay a sales tax

4
Who Actually Pays Taxes (Cont.)
  • Everyone must pay taxes
  • Even people who didnt have to pay online taxes
  • This is called a user tax

5
User Tax
  • A tax that is paid when people purchase something
    online
  • Sometimes the buyer pays it and sometimes the
    seller pays it
  • Most states only collect on high priced items
  • Federal laws make it hard for states to collect
    these taxes

6
Benefits for not paying taxes
  • Saves the consumer money
  • Entices the consumer to create an account on an
    online website
  • Websites make money and might not have to pay a
    tax for it

7
Problems for states
  • Huge deficits
  • About 150B a year is collected in sales tax
  • 1/3 of a states income is sales tax, for those
    who have a sales tax
  • States are raising regular sales tax as a way to
    make up for the loss

8
Deficits Due To Online Buying
9
Ethical?
Only a small inconvenience for consumer Major
problem for the states I think there should be a
national sales tax that is a flat rate, around 5
or 6 percent.
