What is a Butterfly?
  • A butterfly is a flying insect with large wings,
three body parts, a pair of antennae
  • The butterflies body is covered with tiny sensory
hairs that guide the butterfly while flying and
allow it to feel the environment

4
Flying
  • The wings of their bodies are attached to the
thorax, which is the mid-section of their bodies
  • In order to fly, their body temperatures must be
    at least 86
  • As butterflies get older, their wings fade and
    become ragged
  • They can fly between 5mph-30mph
  • Butterflies are very good fliers because they
have two pairs of large wings.

5
Butterfly life cycle
  • Butterflies go through a series of 4 stages in
    order to become a butterfly

Where do they live?
  • The place that they live is called their habitat
  • Butterflies live all over the world and are found
in all different types of environments -- hot and
cold, dry and moist, at sea level and high in the
    mountains
  • However, most butterflies are found in tropical
    areas, such as tropical rainforests
  • Butterflies will sometimes migrate to avoid
environmental conditions (extreme cold or hot
    weather)
