Introduction

• On the day they fell, It was hypothesized, not
  proven, that the impact of commercial aircraft
  and the ensuing fire caused by aircraft fuel led
  to the destruction of the North and South World
  Trade Center Towers, on September 11, 2001.

• The federal government was charged with
  conducting a rigorous scientific investigation to
  determine the cause of global collapse of WTC
  12.
• So, why did the towers collapse?
• By now, 2009, we should have a definitive
  answer, but we do not.

• Incredibly, with a budget of 17.5 million
  dollars,
• and a staff of hundreds, after a 3 year study
  which produced a 10000 page final report,
• NIST still admits they do not know what caused
  the global collapse of the towers.

• There are really two important questions
• 1) The Cause of the destruction of the twin
  towers.
• 2) The quality of the investigation which went
  into determining the cause.
• This presentation will focus on question 2)

  investigation, we will
• Look at some of the Available Evidence
• See how the FEMA and NIST investigations handled
  that evidence
• Look at some of the responses from the
  engineering community.

• Each tower was 1375 ft. tall, with 110 floors of
  12.5 ft. height
• Each consisted of a perimeter of 244 structural
  steel columns forming a square plan, with
  horizontal bracing (spandrels) and extremely
  rigid chamfered corners.
•   
• The building cores, of dimensions 79X139 ft., was
  a veritable forest of 47 columns, horizontal and
  diagonal cross braced.
•  
• The 47 core columns varied in thickness with
  floor height. Individual core columns in the
  lower core measured 52 x 22 in. (in plan), and
  were formed of 5 and 3 inch plate into almost
  solid steel shafts that weighed up to 56 tons.
  This construction changed to relatively light
  I-beam cross section above the 85th floor.

• NIST notes that because of severed columns, loads
  on adjacent perimeter columns, increased by up to
  25.
•  Yet, ENR noted that loads on perimeter columns
  could be increased by a factor of 20 (2000 )
  without failing.

• A document from the Port Authority of New
  York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) indicated that the
  impact of a Boeing 707 aircraft was analyzed
  during the design stage of the WTC towers. The
  analysis concluded that such a collision would
  result in only local damage which could not cause
  collapse or substantial damage to the building.
  
• NIST supporter Eduardo Kausel of MIT argues that
  the 707 and 767 are comparable aircraft, and that
  the fire caused the collapse.

• John Skilling, partner in WSHJ, who died in
  1998, stated in a 1993 interview with The Seattle
  Times Our analysis indicated the biggest
  problem would be the fact that all the fuel (from
  the airplane) would dump into the building. There
  would be a horrendous fire. A lot of people would
  be killed. But, he says, The building structure
  would still be there.

  design of many major modern structures, including
  Columbia Center in Seattle

A few NIST arguments

• NIST contracted with Underwriters
  Laboratories (UL) to test floor trusses like
  those in the WTC towers. All four test specimens
  were subject to a standard fire test (ASTM E119,
  with a max temperature of almost 1000 deg. C) and
  sustained the maximum design load (twice that on
  the WTC trusses) for two hours without
  collapsing.
• NIST found no significant steel
  temperatures over 625 deg. C.
• (Could this be because there was not much
  building steel left after most of it was rapidly
  removed from he site by the city of new York?)
• Yet their report concludes column and floor
  assemblies softened due to fire and the floors
  began to sag in the impact zone, which caused
  perimeter columns to buckle inwards, leading to
  collapse initiation.

A few NIST arguments

• NISTs basic argument for global collapse is
  the "descending block scenario", by which
• The change in potential energy due to downward
  movement of building mass above the buckled
  columns exceeded the strain energy that could
  have been absorbed by the structure. Global
  collapse then ensued. (Repeated 12 times in the
  report)
• Yet they provided no momentum transfer
  analysis for this, but merely assumed it to be
  the case.

• Further, there is photographic evidence for both
  towers, that there was no "descending upper
  block, because the upper block disintegrated
  before it fell onto the lower block.

  little

• Which block will hit the ground first?
• NIST says both blocks will hit the ground at the
  same time

A few NIST omissions

• NIST also omitted or distorted many other
  important aspects of the collapses, including
  movement of the WTC1 antenna before the adjacent
  façade, pyroclastic dust clouds, and pools of
  molten metal in the WTC basements weeks after the
  attacks.
• NIST also failed to provide follow up study
  on the eutechtic reaction which eroded steel
  beams to razor thickness, which FEMA recommended
  be investigated in future studies.

• A lone scientist, Abdolhasan Astaneh Asl, funded
  by the National Science foundation, got access to
  the steel before the ASCE/FEMA team and NIST.
  Despite the fact that 40 percent of a steel beam
  was torn away, the column did not collapse, an
  example of redundancy built into the
  1970s-vintage structure. With admiration,
• Asl said
• "The impact
• did nothing
• to this building."

• James Quintiere, PhD, one of the worlds
  leading fire science researchers and safety
  engineers, and former Chief of the Fire Science
  Division of NIST, did not like how the
  investigation was handled, and has called for an
  independent review.

• The engineering community at large has raised
  questions about the results of the NIST WTC
  investigation. The popular British construction
  industry magazine New Civil Engineer
  International (NCEI) has posted several articles
  which note that among other things
• NIST continually changed its story during the
  investigation
• NIST is refusing to show computer visualizations
  (ie simulations) of the collapse

• Richard Gage is a degreed and licensed
  architect from the San Francisco Bay area and a
  member of the American Institute of Architects.
• In 2006, he founded Architects and Engineers
  for 9/11 Truth (www.ae911truth.org) which as of
  September 2008 has garnered 474 professional
  signatures asking Congress for a serious
  investigation into the destruction of WTC1, WTC2,
  and WTC7 on 9/11/01.

• Earl Sutherland, CEO of the Seattle Based firm
  Earl Sutherland Associates (who is not
  affiliated with any 9/11 Truth group)
• Wrote, on an image of the South Tower
  Collapsing
• Impossible from solely impact of an aircraft"
• Further he wrote
• "A a metallurgical engineer, it was obvious from
  reports of the structural steel heating and
  conditions after the event, that the collapse of
  the building from the aircraft impact was not the
  sole cause. To me it was incredible that there
  appeared to be no real investigation of the
  event. Probably politics."

• Steven Jones, who has a Phd in physics, has
  shown, based on the presence of flowing metal and
  eutectic sulfur, and the chemical composition of
  the remnants, That the destruction of the towers
  is consistent with the use of thermite or
  thermate,
• Jones has also noted that NIST was remiss in
  neglecting to test for explosive residue.

The fire engineering community

• Firefighters for 9-11 Truth
  (http//firefightersfor911truth.org) states
• "...NFPA (National Fire Protection
  Association) 921, which is the National Standard
  for Fire and Explosion Investigations, very
  clearly indicates in numerous sections that the
  possibility of explosives should have been
  thoroughly investigated. Specifically in NFPA 921
  18.3.2 'High Order Damage'- 'High-order damage is
  characterized by shattering of the structure,
  producing small, pulverized debris. Walls, roofs,
  and structural members are splintered or
  shattered, with the building completely
  demolished. Debris is thrown great distances,
  possibly hundreds of feet. High-order damage is
  the result of rapid rates of pressure rise.'
  World Trade Centers 1, 2, and 7 all clearly met
  this definition therefore they should have been
  thoroughly investigated and analyzed for
  explosives. ...

  Senior Military, Intelligence Service, Law
  Enforcement, and Government Officials over 290
  professors over 210 9/11 Survivors and family
  members over 140 artists, entertainers and media
  professionals over 120 pilots and aviation
  professionals and over 530 engineers and
  architects appear on this site questioning the
  official story.

Conclusion

• Skeptics of the official story believe that a
  new truly independent investigation, with supoena
  power, will be necessary to learn the truth of
  why the WTC towers fell.
