Objectives
  • Define the objectives of the Individualized
    Learning Plan process
  • Describe the components of an effective ILP for a
    Pediatric Nephrology trainee
  • Define the objectives of the Semi-Annual Review
    process
  • Describe the components of an effective
Semi-Annual Review for a Pediatric Nephrology
    trainee

3
Individualized Learning Plan (ILP)
  • A user (student) specific strategy of learning
that takes into consideration student's strengths
    and weaknesses.
  • Presumes the needs of individual students are
different, and thus, must be differently
    addressed.
  • Generated after interaction between student and
teacher - based upon mutual assessment.
  • The ILP
  • Incorporates long-term goals of the student
  • Identifies specific learning objectives
  • Based on mutual agreement between student and
    teacher
  • Defines framework for periodic re-assessment

4
Components of a Learning Plan
  • Goals/Objectives
  • achieve within a specific period of time
  • may use sub-goals that can be realized within
    weeks or months.
  • Actions
  • for each learning goal/sub-goal - actual
    behaviors
  • Resources
  • for each action - one or more resources
  • resources - observations, reading, course
    completion, discussion, writing, preparation of
    course materials, test taking, teaching,
    completing competency assessment
  • Evidence of Attainment
  • for each action - measurable evidence of
    attainment
  • evidence - to demonstrate that action has been
taken, progress towards the goal has been made,
and finally that goal has been achieved (private
    vrs public).

5
SMART Objectives
  • SMART
  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time-bound
  • For example Will complete review of Pediatric
Nephrology textbook and generate 10 board style
questions for each chapter by 7/08

6
The Learning Plan
  • A learning plan is a way to clarify what you
want to learn, show how it relates to your other
life goals and then to provide yourself with the
resources you need to achieve your learning and
a way to demonstrate to oneself and to others
that one has, at the end of the day, actually
    learned something.
  • Steven Forth The Learning Citizen 2004

7
ILP allows the Learner to .
  • Analyze your learning needs in a systematic way.
  • Create a plan for engaging in learning
    experiences based on these needs.
  • Document your commitment to lifelong learning.
  • Have a positive impact on your own clinical
    practice and professional development.

Attributes of Learning
  • Learner (Learning) Centered
  • Knowledge Centered
  • Assessment Centered
  • Summative
  • Formative
  • Community Centered

14
ILP issues
  • Difficulty of fully involving learners in
    developing own of ILP
  • limited knowledge of what is needed, resources,
    etc
  • Amount of time needed create and review ILP
  • Challenge of incorporating individual goals into
    group learning
  • How to keep paperwork manageable
  • how to use as ongoing guide
  • how to transition from one ILP to the next
  • How to keep meaningful

15
ILP Activities
  • Dyad activity
  • Construct your own ILP for the next academic year
    review with a PD colleague
  • Group activity
  • Small groups construct an improved Pediatric
    Nephrology Fellowship ILP template

16

Semi Annual ReviewCritique
  • Why are they so dreaded?
  • What is the purpose?
  • Weed out poor performers
  • Recognize the best performers
  • Provide guidance for further education, career
  • Map out individual development plan
  • Decision as to purpose and format is PDs

20
Semi Annual ReviewPotential Value
  • Can provide accurate assessment of trainees
    status at the time
  • Can provide opportunity to agree on trainees
    developmental plan
  • Can provide chance for advice
  • Can serve as an effective tool to develop a
    stronger organization/program

21
Semi-Annual Review Possible Components
  • Self assessment
  • Review of evaluations
  • Rankings?
  • Assessment of program, faculty by trainee
  • Identification of education plan
  • Knowledge
  • Skills
  • Board Preparation/Review
  • Career Plans - advice

22
Semi-Annual ReviewBusiness Perspective
  • Employee satisfaction studies reveal more not
    less interest in performance reviews.
  • Most employees want more feedback
  • Frequent feedback in the course of everyday
activities might dampen the cry for semi-annual
reviews, but supervisors, being human, can't
always be counted upon to give feedback when it
should be given (although they still should be
encouraged to give feedback when it is
    appropriate). A semi-annual review program
institutionalizes the process of giving more
    frequent feedback.
  • The idea is not popular with all employees -
those with longer tenure tend to be satisfied
    with annual reviews.
  • There is no need for a change in pay to accompany
each review in a semi-annual review process.
Every other review can be a point where employees
and supervisors "check in" with each other. The
employee benefits by not being "surprised" of a
negative evaluation the employer benefits by
keeping employees more focused on goals and
    objectives.
