The First Years
  • Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January
30,1882. As a child he lived in Hyde Park, New
York. His parents were James and Sara. He was an
only child and he was very wealthy.

3
Teenager
  • Roosevelts first thirteen years he did not go to
school. Instead he spent long hours admiring his
father and was very close to his mother. At
fourteen he attended Groton Boarding School after
taking private lessons at home. At school he was
older than most of the boys and had difficulty
    making friends.

4
Love at First Sight
  • At Harvard Franklin met Eleanor Roosevelt and at
last found love. Eleanor was Franklins fifth
cousin. They were definitely an odd match. They
married In 1905. Together they had six children,
but one died as a baby.

5
A Man
  • After high school graduation he attended Harvard
College. Roosevelt had average grades. He was
more interested in his social life than his
school work. He received a BA in three years. In
1901 Roosevelts father died from a severe heart
attack. Sara Roosevelts mom moved to
Cambridge, Massachusetts to be closer to
Franklin. In 1910 he was elected State Senate of
    New York.

6
Life After College
  • In 1912 Roosevelt was reelected State Senate. He
also supported Woodrow Wilsons candidacy. As a
reward he became Assistant Secretary of the Navy
in 1913. He was in this position until
1920.seven years The experience helped him
learn. Then he became Commander-in-Chief during
World War II. After that he was elected vice
president in 1920. Finally he had a little rest.

7
Political Business
  • The family moved to Warm Springs, Georgia to help
polio victims. With help he remained in his
political career. In 1928 he became governor of
New York. He then began campaigning for president.

8
Helping Hands as President
  • Hoover president and depression getting worse,
Roosevelt became president! He beat Hoover
November of 1932 by seven million votes. Franklin
soon took action in the depression. He started
    agencies like AAA Agriculture Adjustment
    Administration and CCC Civilian Conservation
Corps for young men to get jobs. Roosevelt also
helped the hungry and people with no jobs. Some
    still criticized.

9
More than Two Terms
  • Roosevelt could easily defeat presidents like
Alfred M. Landon in 1936, Wendell Willkie in 1940
and Thomas E. Dewey in 1944. Hes the only
president that was elected for two terms.

10
After Victory
  • After his victory he planned to add new justices
to Supreme Court. But the critics over ruled him
and said he was packing the court. In 1938
Roosevelt defeated many others but it backfired
when those he defeated were elected for congress.
It was then the midway of his career, also his
    second term.

11
Towards The End
  • By 1939, Franklin was focused on foreign problems
with the outbreak of war. When Hitler attacked
Poland, Roosevelt didnt expect America to be in
Nazi aggression. Franklin then tried to create
aid in Britain, France and China to obtain
    amendment.

12
Even Farther
  • In 1940 the American mood and Franklins policy
changed, big time. Congress enacted military
service. Roosevelt signed a lend-lease bill in
March of 1941 to not let the nation give aid to
nations in war with Italy and Germany. Japan then
attacked on Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941 came
four days later by Germanys and Italys war on
the US. That brought war to our Nation. Roosevelt
used his powers as Commander-in-Chief Armed
    Forces.

13
Death
  • So many hard times and Franklin was worn out! In
1944 he had a medical examination which showed
heart and circulatory problems. War and Domestic
politics were heavy and pressure was on him.
Then, while on vacation at Warm Springs, Georgia
April 12, 1945, he suffered a massive stroke, two
and a half hours later without regaining
consciousness. At 63 he was gone and was buried
in the Rose Garden of his estate at Hyde Park,
    New York.
