What exactly is a Western Fox Snake?
  • Between 91 and 137 cm long
  • Have light brown to black spots
  • Heads are brown to reddish
  • Diurnal hunters for small rodents
  • Females lay eggs in summer, hatch in fall. 6-29
    per clutch.

Habitat
  • Lives in prairie grasslands
  • Usually found near water and borders of forests
  • Will even be found in crop fields

Why is it Endangered?
  • Loss of prairie
  • Wetland drainage
  • Often mistaken for copperhead or rattlesnake
  • Interesting to note that it is common in other
    states such as Wisconsin and Iowa

Whats being done?
  • Not very much theres actually plenty of them
    outside Missouri
  • In MO, further destruction avoided by not
    interfering with wetlands and not removing unique
    features like overturned trees from many parts of
    landscape.
