  • SIC was updated every 10-15 years
  • Dominated by manufacturing fields

  • Designed in 1997 to update and replace the SIC.

    the United States.

  • Goal was to create an Internet accessible
    comprehensive data dissemination system .
  • Created by a team from IBM, Oracle, Environmental
    Systems Research Institute (ESRI) and Census
    Bureau officials.

    Oracles database capabilities and ESRIs

Decennial Census Information
  • Census information is collected in two ways
  • Short form questions which inquire about age,
    sex, race, relationship, marital status (known as
    100 questions because they are asked of
  • Long form questions ask about education,
    employment, income, homeowner costs, etc. in
    addition to the 100 questions (collected from a
    sample of households)

American Community Survey
  • Provides up-to-date sampling of American
  • It began in 1996 with 4 communities
  • 2003 - data for cities and counties available
  • 2004 - data for areas or populations of 65,000 or
  • By 2008 data will be available for populations of
    less than 15,000
