My Expectations
  • I would learn how to design and create web pages.
  • I would become more proficient at using Excel.
  • I would learn how to create a standards-based
    lesson.
  • I would learn new techniques for integrating
    technology into my classroom.

3
Actual Learning
  • I did learn how to create web pages and how to
    upload them.
  • I am more comfortable using Excel.
  • I became more confident about creating standards
    based lessons.
  • I learned about using a scan converter to show
what was on my monitor on a TV.
  • I learned new tricks for using Power Point.
  • I developed new technology contacts within our
    district.

4
Successes of my lesson
  • Students who had never used the Internet were
    exposed to its use.
  • Students were interested in the virtual field
    trips.
  • Students learned who George Washington was and
why he was a famous American.
  • Students got to virtually visit several national
    landmarks.
  • Students were enthusiastic about each new
activity when they came to class.

5
Shortcomings
  • I had to teach this lesson to two different
structured mixing groups (these were designed
to give my English Language Learners an
opportunity to interact with fluent English
    speakers).
  • I had 45 minutes each day to meet with the groups
    to do the lessons.
  • Due to the structure of the structured mixing
time I had to switch groups every two weeks.

6
  • Due to holidays and time to administer report
card assessments it took over two months to
    complete the lessons.
  • Due to the structured mixing component I did
not have time to instruct students who were not
in my homeroom class how to use the necessary
    software.
  • Again due to the structured mixing constraints
I was not able to fully implement the final
project I had planned for my lesson.

7
Student DataBlue Group
  • I taught this lesson to two groups of
    heterogeneously (according to language) mixed
    first graders.
  • The Blue Group turned out to have more native
English speakers and higher performing students
    overall (irregardless of home language).
  • The Blue Group posted higher scores overall.

  • The Orange Group turned out to have only three
native English speakers and lower performing
students overall (irregardless of home language).
  • The Orange Group posted lower scores overall.

Revisions
  • The only revision that I made to the lesson
itself was to add KidPix as a medium for the
    final presentation.
  • I would revise my implementation of the lesson by
only teaching it to a group to whom I had already
taught basic computer skills and how to use the
    software for the final presentation.

18
  • I would allow more time for working on the final
    project.
  • I would continue to present this as a whole-group
lesson to first graders. It worked better for me
to be the one controlling the Internet and then
adding commentary as needed as we visited various
    websites.

My Gains From CTAP 295 Participation
  • This project crystallized for me the process of
how to create a standards-based lesson and why we
need to consider how we will assess student
    progress before selecting activities.
  • The use of technology needs to be focused on
increasing student achievement and not just for
    technologys sake.
