Title: Unit 7 Exponents

1
Unit 7 Exponents Polynomials
  • Topic Exponents, Powers of 10, Scientific
    Notation

2
Exponential Terms
  • Exponent
  • Power/ of times something is multiplied
  • Ex. 63 3 is an exponent
  • Base
  • Value with an exponent/superscript
  • x5 x is a base
  • Coefficient
  • Number in front of a variable
  • Acts as a multiplier
  • 2y3 2 is a coefficient the exponent does not
affect the coefficient, only the base

3
Examples of Exponential Expressions
4
Rules for simplifying exponential expressions
(make note cards for these)
  • Zero Exponent
  • Negative Exponents

5
Rules for simplifying exponential expressions
  • Product of Powers Property
  • Bases must be the same
  • Power of a Power Property

6
Rules for simplifying exponential expressions
  • Power of a Product Property
  • Quotient of Powers Property

7
Rules for simplifying exponential expressions
  • Positive Power of a Quotient Property
  • Negative Power of a Quotient Property

8
When is an exponential expression considered
simplified?
  • No negative exponents
  • All bases/coefficients have been completely
    reduced
  • No powers raised to powers
  • No products or quotients raised to powers

9
Writing Powers of 10 in Regular Notation
  • Positive Exponents
  • Start w/ 1 and move decimal n places right (value
    increases)
  • Negative Exponents
  • Start w/ 1 and move decimal n places left (value
    decreases)

10
Scientific Notation
  • Using powers of 10 to represent very large or
    very small values
  • General format
  • If number in regular notation gt 1, x is positive
  • If number in regular notation lt 1, x is negative

11
Homework
  • Workbook Section 7.1
  • Workbook Section 7.2
