The global average surface temperature of the
earth has increased by about 0.7C over the 20th
century, mainly due to burning fossil fuels.
Warming of more than 1 degree Celsius above
todays level will make the Earth warmer than it
has been in a million years. Dr. James
Hansen, NASA Goddard Institute

U.S. Energy Consumption by Sector A
reorganization of existing data--combining the
energy required to run residential, commercial,
and industrial buildings along with the embodied
energy of industry-produced materials like
carpet, tile, and hardware--exposes architecture
as the hidden polluter.Data from Ed Mazria

7
U.S. CO2 Emissions by Sector While levels of
carbon dioxide emissions produced by industry
remain steady, those produced by architecture are
soaring, signaling a pressing need for widespread
change in the way architects design buildings.
8
76 of all plant generated electricity used just
to operate buildings.
The Building Sector as the major global
greenhouse gas emitting sector, is poised to fuel
the world's rush toward climate change on the
backs of coal. The U.S. alone is projected to
build 1,300 to 1,900 new power plants over the
next 20 years (about one plant every week)......
9
Total U.S. Energy Consumption Despite the United
Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
which promised to restore greenhouse gas
concentrations in the atmosphere to 1990 levels,
US energy consumption increased by 17 through
the 90s. Experts predict an additional 37 rise
in energy consumption by 2020.
10
THE BUILDING SECTOR A Historic
Opportunity Herein lies the hope! By the year
2035, approximately three-quarters (75) of the
built environment will be either new or
renovated.
11
  • The Challenge
  • Architecture 2030 has issued The 2030 Challenge
asking the global architecture and building
community to adopt the following Targets
  • All new buildings, developments and major
renovations shall be designed to meet a fossil
fuel energy consumption performance standard of
50 of the regional (or country) average for that
    building type.
  • At a minimum, an equal amount of existing
building area shall be renovated annually to meet
a fossil fuel energy consumption performance
standard of 50 of the regional (or country)
    average for that building type.
  • The fossil fuel reduction standard for all new
    buildings shall be increased to
  • 60 in 2010
  • 70 in 2015
  • 80 in 2020
  • 90 in 2025
  • Carbon-neutral in 2030 (using no fossil fuel GHG
    emitting energy to operate).
  • These targets may be accomplished by
    implementing sustainable design strategies,
    generating on-site renewable power and/or
purchasing (20 maximum) renewable energy and/or
    certified renewable energy credits.

Action must be prompt, otherwise CO2-producing
infrastructure that may be built within a decade
will make it impractical to keep further global
warming under 1 degree Celsius. Dr. James
Hansen, NASA Goddard Institute
