Title: Mitosis and Meiosis

Mitosis and Meiosis
2
Five Steps of Mitosis
  • Prophase
  • Metaphase
  • Anaphase
  • Telophase
  • Cytokinesis

3
Important Facts
  • Mitosis begins with one cell that contains 96
chromosomes (after duplication of the DNA).
  • At the end there are two cells that contain 46
    chromosomes each.

Telophase and Cytokinesis
8
Plate Formation
  • This occurs only in plants, which have cell walls.

Meiosis
  • Meiosis has two phases known as I and II.
  • They contain all of the phases of mitosis, but
    for two different phases.
  • At the beginning you have one cell that contains
96 chromosomes (it has twice as many as mitosis
    because it will split twice).
  • At the end you have 4 cells that have 23
chromosomes each. These cells (gametes) will
eventually pair up with other gametes from the
opposite sex to form a zygote during the process
    of fertilization.
  • 23 23 46 (complete human cell)

Differences Between Mitosis and Meiosis
  • Mitosis is used to make new regular body cells.
  • Meiosis is used to create gametes or sex cells
that will go on to be one-half of a future human
    being.
