Unit 3
  • CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION IN THE ARTS AND
    TECHNOLOGY

3
Creativity is a measure of personal achievement
in the production of an artefact, even if it is
derivative.

4
Innovation is an extension of creativity the
production of something completely new eg a
new art form or style, the use of new materials
or techniques, or the introduction of a new
concept.
Sarah LucasChicken Knickers 1997
Roger Hiorns Seizure 2008
5
Innovation is also an important element in
technology, where the objective is not a new
form of art, but a new solution to a human
problem.
Willard Boyle and George Smith won the Nobel
Prize (2009) for their part in the invention of
the charge-coupled device, or CCD. CCDs have
transformed scientific measurement and everyday
life
6
Andy Warhol
7
At the beginning of the 1960s, Warhol was a very
successful commercial illustrator.
Warhol tried to exhibit some of his drawings but
was turned down. He began to rethink the
relationship between his commercial work and the
rest of his art. Instead of treating these things
as opposites, he merged them, and began to take
commercial and popular culture more explicitly as
his topic.
8
Warhol began to make paintings of iconic American
products Among the imagery tackled by Warhol were
dollar bills, celebrities and brand name
products.
9
Innovator or derivative?
10
Andy Warhol ----- by David Bailey (photographer
who made a famous documentary about Warhol)
He invented something newhe was the arrowhead of
making the mass media into a sort of art form.
You looked at a box of soap powder in a different
way . Its accessible. When people buy art,
they buy Marilyn Monroe or Liz Taylor because
once it goes on the wall, everyone knows what it
is its easy to understand . Andy wasnt a
painter Matisse was a painter. Andy was an
image maker.
11
There is no test for genius, but people say Andy
Warhol was a visual genius.
12
THE BEATLES SGT. PEPPERS LONELY HEARTS CLUB
BAND
13
It was one of the first concept albums. It is
innovative because the theme brought some of the
songs together, whereas on most albums the songs
were unrelated. It was one of the first studio
albums there was no intention of there ever
being a live performance. It brought instruments
from other cultures, like the sitar, into Popular
music. It influenced many artists at the time
and still influences musicians today.
14
It started a fashion trend for military style
coats and moustaches.
It inspired Pepperland in the film Yellow
Submarine.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO Choose an artistic style
and list its defining characteristics or
features. Find out some important biographical
facts about the artist who created this style.
Establish a timeline for the development and
production of works in this style. Is the
style associated with any social, moral,
philosophical or political beliefs? Did the
artist intend to promote these beliefs?

or form Art is a generic term including all
expressive arts visual, musical, literary,

moral, philosophical or political beliefs? Did

you have done this, compare it with other styles
or forms studied by fellow students through
a focussed discussion.
19
Group discussion This is best done in groups of
8-10. Appoint a chair to manage the discussion.
The group should be challenged to relate their
studies of individual artists to one broad
general question about art. For example What
makes good art? Does a new art form always
challenge convention? What is the job of the
artist? The chair should make a brief record of
agreed conclusions, for comparison with those of
other groups.
