Title: Tundra

1
Tundra
By Cameron Rijke
2
The tundra is located in northern Canada,
Greenland, and northern Russia.

Location
3
Climate
  • The tundra climate is very cold and harsh.
  • The average precipitation per year is 10 inches
and almost all of that is snow.
  • The average temperature is between -20 and -30
    degrees F.
  • The highest temperature the tundra gets to is 50
    degrees F.

4
The Polar Bear
  • Scientific name Ursus maritimus
  • Information on the habitat They live on land,
but go hunting in the water.
  • An interesting fact about the animals Their fur
allows them to live in temperatures of -34
    degrees F.
  • The adult polar bears fur is a little bit darker
    than a young polar bears.
  • The males can weigh up to almost 1,000 lbs.
  • Their scientific name means sea bear.

5
Snowy Owl
  • Scientific Name Nyctea scandiaca
  • Information on habitat From one website it said
that the snowy owl does not actually live in
trees, it lives in little burrowed holes and it
only go in trees to hunt. Another website said
that it just perches on low to the ground
    branches.
  • An interesting fact about the animal Their eyes
take up more space in the skull than the brain.
  • The females usually have many brown spots and
lines on them, but the males usually have very
    few.
  • Snowy owls hunt animals as big as arctic foxes.
  • Unlike most owls the snowy owl is not nocturnal.

6
Caribou Moss
  • Scientific Name Cladonia rangiferina
  • Information on the habitat This type of moss
grow on rocks and on the ground.
  • An interesting fact about the plants Even though
it is called caribou moss it is actually a
    lichen.
  • Its tissue is not easily damaged by frost so that
helps it survive in the tundra.
  • Lichen can survive a long period of time without
water by simply going dormant which means they
    just go into a sleep.
  • Even after staying dormant for a long time they
can still begin to grow again.

7
Pasque Flower
  • Scientific Name Anemone patens.
  • Information on habitat It grows close to the
ground and almost all over the tundra.
  • An interesting fact about the plants It is the
    state flower of South Dakota.
  • Grow from 6-8 inches off the ground.
  • It is covered with fine silky hair to insulate
    it.
  • It is used for a cure for an eye disease called
    cataracts.

Current Problems
  • Global warming is causing the ice caps to melt
which forces animals to lose their habitats
because there is less ice for the animals to live
on. That has caused the polar bear to be
endangered. It is also causing the tundra in
Canada to turn into Boreal Forests. "The
conventional thinking on treeline dynamics has
been that advances are very slow because
conditions are so harsh at these high latitudes
and altitudes," said Dr. Ryan Danby, a biologist
at the University of Alberta and lead author of
the study. "But what our data indicates is that
there was an upslope surge of trees in response
to warmer temperatures. Its like it waited until
conditions were just right and then it decided to
get up and run, not just walk."

10
Geography
  • The tundra is the worlds youngest biome.
  • It is a vast, treeless place.
  • It covers 20 of the earths surface.
  • The ground is permanently frozen.
  • It has a fairly large amount of mountains
