Title: How to write a list of sources

1
How to write a list of sources
2
Why do I have to write a list of sources?
  • The reader must be able to find the sources you
    have used.
  • In the list of sources you include every source
you have referred to in the text.
  • You only write in the list of sources the sources
    you have actually referred to!

3
The list of sources
  • is in alphabetical order!
  • can be divided according to the type of source if
you have a lot of sources
  • e.g. Books
  • Articles
  • Internet sources
  • Interviews

4
How do I actually write the list of sources? (p.
7, 14-15)
  • The basic principle is this
  • Authors surname, authors first name (or
initials) year. Name of the e.g. book in italics.
    Publishing place publisher.
  • Kivekäs Pauli 2003. My Life at Sea. Turku
    Sydväst Publishing.

5
Is it really that easy?
  • Yes and no no because you have different
    kinds of sources...
  • e.g. articles and Internet sources

6
If you use an article from e.g. a journal or
book, this is what you do
  • Authors surname, first name year. Name of the
article (in quotation marks if you want to). In
Authors/Editors name (if its a book) if you
can find an author or editor . Name of the
    journal/book in italics. Publisher publishing
    place, p. x-x.
  • (på svenska I, suomeksi Teoksessa)

7
  • Toivonen, Jarmo 2005. Management Level Studies
at Sydväst Maritime. In Sydväst Maritime 192
Years of Maritime Training. Turku Sydväst
    Publishing, p. 12-15.

8
If you have an Internet source
  • Authors surname, first name year (if you can
find a year...). Title of the text in italics.
Collected xx.xx.200x. Available at the Internet
    address
  • Miinalainen, Janne. My English Assignments.
    Collected 6.9.2005. Available at
    http//maritime.sydvast.fi/miinalainen/english.ht
    m

9
What if...
  • ... there is no author?
  • Then you start your entry in the list of sources
with the name of the e.g. book.
  • Kodin suuri tietosanakirja. 1979. Helsinki WSOY.

10
  • When you have Internet sources, it is quite usual
that you cannot find an author. In that case,
begin the entry with the authority/organization
responsible for the site or if you cannot find
one, with the title of the text.
  • Finnish Maritime Administration. Rules for Winter
Navigation. Instructions to the industry, ship
    owners and charterers. Collected 6.9.2005.
    Avalaible at http//www.fma.fi/e/functions/winter
    _navigation/pelisaannot_en.pdf
  • The Most Terrible Hurricanes. Collected 6.9.2005.
    Available at http//www.terriblehurricanes.com

11
  • Of course, if you cannot find the author or who
is responsible for the Internet site nor any
sensible title, do you really want to use that
    source...?

12
So this is what you should remember
  • The list of sources is in alphabetical order
  • Everything is pretty easy if you can find the
    name of the author
  • Be careful with Internet sources if you cannot
find who has written the text/is responsible for
the site, do not use it
  • Start writing your list of sources immediately
    when you find a source/use a source!!!
