  • Second Acts is a non-profit, 501(c)(3)
  • charitable fundraising organization
  • that distributes 100 of ALL
  • donations received to small,
  • volunteer-run animal rescue groups
  • nationwide which adopt a no-kill
  • policy.

  • These dogs and cats are rescued from
  • local pounds and shelters before they are
  • scheduled to be euthanized. The cost to
  • spay/neuter (along with other veterinary
  • expenses) plus food and shelter until they
  • are adopted is very costly.

4
  • Here are some of the dogs and
  • cats that were rescued from the
  • generous donations of our
  • supporters, along with their
  • stories

  • Bethany was found by a passerby on the
  • shoulder of an Iowa highway. Severely
  • hurt, x-rays revealed nine fractures in her
  • front legs, requiring two long surgeries to
  • repair.
  • She was brought to Animal Lifeline of
  • Iowa. Following a lengthy period of
  • veterinary care and healing, further x-rays
  • showed that Bethany was healing well,
  • and she was adopted soon after.

  • Narnia came to AJ's Best
  • Friends in Arizona from the
  • local Animal Control. She was
  • declawed and about 2 years old.
  • Her black coat was matted so
  • tightly it was more like felt than
  • fur. She was in a lot of pain and
  • very close to death. The vet
  • shaved off her fur and found a
  • very large, infected wound on
  • her thigh that went down
  • to the muscle.
  • Two months later Narnia was a
  • thriving, black ball of fire, and
  • she is now a member of the
  • family who fostered her.

  • Hero was rescued from a local pound in
  • Prague, Oklahoma by Save-A-Dog.  He
  • sustained injuries as a result of either
  • acid or boiling water poured on his
  • back.  In addition, he was being kept in
  • a pen with much bigger dogs who were
  • constantly jumping on him.  However,
  • Heros spirit never dimmed.
  • He is now completely healed (though
  • his back still bears a scar and the fur did
  • not grow back).  More importantly,
  • Hero was adopted and now lives
  • happily with his new family.

Cheesepuffs eyelids did not fully develop and
his front leg was deformed when he was found by
Whiskers Wags rescue in New Jersey. Neither
handicap bothered him in the least, and soon
after he was adopted by a new loving family.

  • Camille was found in a
  • kill shelter, neglected and
  • in poor condition when
  • she was saved by
  • Rainbow Rescues in
  • West Virginia.  She was
  • taken to the vet and the
  • groomer and was soon
  • adopted by a new loving
  • family.

Jaspurr, a Siamese mix bobtail kitten, was
rescued from a shelter by Furry Friends in
Michigan. After a week or so in his foster home,
it became apparent that something was not right.
Following a visit to the vet, it was discovered
that he had a birth defect that didn't allow him
to urinate properly. Despite corrective surgery,
the area closed again, necessitating further
surgery that, in effect, changed parts of his
anatomy to that of a female. Through all the
surgeries, he had the best attitude and was
loving and playful. Jaspurr has recently been
adopted by someone in the veterinary field.

  • Dandy had been dumped and left
  • to survive on his own, a castoff
  • from a puppy mill. He was
  • horribly matted, hungry and
  • going into shock when
  • rescued by Out West Rescue in
  • Washington. Dandy was
  • uncomfortable with being
  • touched and walking on a leash,
  • and he was also terrified of a
  • bath.
  • After about a week, he felt
  • safe enough to come up to
  • anyone. He is now approaching
  • his foster mom and putting his
  • paws up for loving.

Timmy was rescued by Rays of Hope in Kentucky. He
had no social skills with other cats and very
little with people. He has only three legs, so
he could not walk very well and was unable to go
out alone. Seven months later, Timmy was a
changed cat. He learned how to walk, began
playing with a small dog at the rescue, and
befriended a kitten that was a new rescue.

  • Alii, a 3-year-old Lab
  • mix rescued by the
  • Hawaii Dog Foundation,
  • was completely
  • neglected, deprived of
  • food and water, and
  • living under cruel
  • conditions.  He was
  • anemic, had a lacerated
  • tongue and wounds on his
  • face and body.
  • Today, AliI is safe, happy
  • and has become
  • accustomed to living life
  • as a member of his new
  • family.

Both of Shaylas eyes were infected and stuck
shut when she was rescued by Pet Project in North
Dakota. Her temperature was dangerously high and
one of her eyes had ruptured (it eventually had
to be removed). After many weeks of tender
loving care, Shayla thrived. She is now healthy,
happy and living in a loving home.

  • Mugsy the Pug was living her
  • life in a drug house.  Rescued
  • by Other Mothers of Oregon,
  • she soon gave birth to a litter of
  • four precious puglets.  Shortly
  • after this picture was taken at
  • three days of age, everyone
  • including Mom has been
  • adopted by a new family.
