Philosophy
  • It is my goal to educate each and every one of my
    students to the best of my ability - providing
    them with challenges and extra support, where
    needed.

A bit about Me...
  • Former student of CUSD - went to Regnart,
    Kennedy, and Monta Vista
  • B.S. in Biological Sciences - University of the
    Pacific
  • Senior counselor at summer camps for 7 years
    running
  • Teaching Credential - Santa Clara University
  • 1st year at Stevens Creek (student taught in the
    district at Garden Gate Elementary in first and
    fifth grade last year)

Classroom Rules
  • Show respect.
  • Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
  • Have a good attitude.
  • Share.
  • Try your best!

Reading
  • The Houghton Mifflin California Reading combines
    the best fiction, non-fiction, multicultural, and
    cross-curricular literature for first grade.
  • Vocabulary, inference, cause and effect,
    comprehension, main ideas, and phonics are
    emphasized.
  • We incorporate lots of other great childrens
    literature.

Spelling
  • Our weekly spelling words will follow the stories
    in our HM reader. The words will follow the
    weekly sounds or patterns.
  • High frequency words will also be a part of
    spelling.
  • Spelling homework and tests will begin later this
    month.

Poetry Journal
  • A new poem will be introduced weekly.
  • Students will practice the weekly poem daily
  • Students will receive a copy of the poems to put
    into their Poetry Journal
  • Great for independent reading!

Writing
  • Weekend News - every Monday, students will write
    a few sentences about their weekend.
  • Daily Journal - students will respond to a daily
    prompt (except on Monday).
  • Step Up to Writing - Organized approach to
    writing w/ common language throughout the grade
    levels
  • Monthly Books - students will write about a
    monthly theme or holiday book.
  • Writing Applications - brief narratives and
    expository descriptions, friendly letters, notes,
    lists and class books.

Reading _at_Home
  • READ, READ, READ!
  • Please read with your child for 15-20 minutes a
    night.
  • The reading time can include reading
    independently, reading to a family member, or
    being read to by an adult. Its all great!

Mathematics
  • Math text MATHEMATICS by Houghton Mifflin
  • Standards number sense, algebra and function,
    reasoning, measurement, money, geometry, data and
    probability
  • Students must memorize addition and subtraction
    facts 1-20.
  • Compucat Marcy Cook Math programs are also
    implemented in class.

Science
  • CUSD has adopted the most recent FOSS kits for
    our science program.
  • Three main themes
  • Physical Science - Solids and Liquids
  • Life Science - Plants and Animals
  • Earth Science - Air and Weather
  • In addition, we will also study color chemistry -
    learning how colors mix together.

    program

  • Our Country
  • Changes over time
  • Celebrate Cultures
  • Goods and Services
  • In addition, we will study five early Native
    American Indian tribes in November. We will also
    study special holidays celebrated around the
    world.

Sharing
  • Weekly sharing topics will be sent home at the
    beginning of every month.
  • Each child will have a specific sharing day and
    topic.
  • Please help your child be prepared for sharing.

Homework Policy
  • Homework folders are sent home on Monday.
  • Usually 2 pages of math and 3-4 spelling
    activities.
  • Homework should be completed with childs best
    effort!
  • Homework is a review to what is covered in class.

Thursday Folders
  • Thursday folders will be sent home on Thursday.
  • Please review the contents with your child.
  • Return the folder and any forms on Friday.
    (Please do not return the classwork.)

Grade Level Newsletter
  • Created monthly
  • The newsletter will explain what we will cover
    during the coming month.
  • It will also list any upcoming events and needs.

  • Small goodie bags (pencils, erasers, small toys,
    etc.) preferred over treats
  • End of the day.
  • Everyone provided for. (Invitations-- all, all
    boys, all girls)

Conferences
  • Parent/Teacher conferences will be held October
    6-14. (Early Dismissal at 130)
  • Each parent will have a 20 minute conference.
  • You may schedule other conferences throughout the
    year. Please email or phone me with any concerns!

  • I would LOVE your support this year!
  • Project Cornerstone - Become a ABC (Asset
    Building Champion) volunteer! First meeting
    Friday, September 5th (TOMORROW) _at_ 830 am in
    Room 18.
  • TB Test required for volunteers.
  • Lunch and Recess Duty (sign up in office)
  • Please view and sign up for anything that you may
    be able to do. I will contact you once I figure
    out a schedule.
