Whats on the horizon?
  • Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) first identified in
Tanzania in 1953, and has been found in west,
central and southern Africa and many areas of
    Asia.

3
  • The term chikungunya is thought to be derived
from the word kungunyala in the Makonde
language in southeastern Tanzania and Mozambique,
which means to dry up or become contorted.

4
  • 2007 first time that local transmission of CHIKV
through mosquitoes has been detected in Europe.
  • Italy province of Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna

5
  • Other countries that have experienced recent
outbreaks of CHIKV include India, Sri Lanka, and
the Indian Ocean Islands Of Mayotte, Mauritius,
Reunion (territory of France), and the

How is Chikv Spread?
  • Mosquitoes become infected with chikungunya virus
when they feed on an infected person. Infected
mosquitoes can then spread the virus to other
    humans when they bite them.
  • Monkeys, and possibly other wild animals, may
also serve as reservoirs of the virus.

8
  • Vectors Primary vector is Aedes aegypti, a
container breeder and aggressive daytime biter.
  • Stegomyia (Aedes) albopictus has played a role
in transmission to people in SE Asia, Africa and
Europe. Container breeder and aggressive daytime
    biter.
