Title: a choice initiative of the Salt Lake City School District
1a choice initiative of the Salt Lake City School
District
2From Eric Jensen, ARTS WITH THE BRAIN IN MIND,
ASCD, 1998
- The arts should be a major discipline in the
schoolsone worth making everybody study and
learn. Not only can the arts be a powerful
solution for helping educators reach a wide range
of learners, they also enhance the process of
learning by developing a students integrated
sensory, attentional, cognitive, emotional, and
motor capacities. Such brain systems are the
driving forces behind all other learning.
3Defining Artstream...
- Artstream, a SLCSD Choice Initiative, builds on
established efforts in schools, K-12, that are
working collaboratively to define, articulate and
implement a sequential, comprehensive arts
education program which
4- Interconnects quality academic and arts
instruction to deepen student understanding of
core concepts - Honors individual needs and talents of all
students through a strong, articulated, arts
curriculum with broad offerings, and - Helps students develop personal potential in all
aspects of life intellectually, physically,
emotionally and socially.
5Artstreams 3-Point Approach
- I Art for Arts Sake
- The study of the individual artistic areas,
including skills, concepts, methods, art history,
critical analysis and aesthetics.
6II Art at the Service of Other Studies
- Art concepts, materials, strategies and processes
used to illuminate and reinforce work in all
disciplines.

10Educational Research Compels Us To Develop Arts
Education In Our Schools
- From Education Week, January 26, 2005 Putting
Arts Education Front and Center, by Rod Paige,
Former Secretary of Education , and Mike
Huckabee, Governor of Arkansas and Chair of the
Education Commission of the States (2004-2006)
11- Research has shown that those who study the arts
improve their achievement in other subjects,
including mathematics, reading, and writing.
12- In math, for example, studies point to a direct
connection between music and spatial reasoning
and spatial temporal skills, which are important
to understanding and using mathematical concepts.
13- For high school students, course taking data
collected by the College Board indicate that
students of the arts annually outperform their
nonarts peers on the SAT. In 2004, for example,
students who studied music scored 40 points
higher on the math portion of the test than
students reporting no arts coursework.
14- Similarly, students who studied acting and play
production outscored their nonarts peers on the
verbal portion of the SAT by an average of 66
points.
15Furthermore
- The academic benefits of arts education also go
beyond math and reading. An analysis of U.S.
Department of Education data on 25,000 middle and
high school students found that students who were
highly involved in the arts performed better on a
variety of academic measures than other
students.
16- They earned better grades, did better on exams,
performed more community service, and watched
fewer hours of television.
17- And a growing amount of evidence shows that the
arts can be particularly beneficial to students
from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and
can even keep some potential dropouts in school.
18- The arts are considered a core academic subject
under the No Child Left Behind law. Artstream
addresses this law as well as the Salt Lake
School Districts Eight Essentials of a Learning
Community.
19- Additional schools from throughout the district
are invited to participate and to become involved
in this choice initiative.
20Artstream schools
- Make arts education a part of their school
improvement plans to foster student achievement
and involve arts specialists and teachers in
meeting these goals.
21- Meet together to plan, develop curriculum and
K-12 activities, as well as to offer and attend
professional development. - Network with community arts organizations,
universities and government agencies. - Become model sites for art education and
collaboration. - Enhance the skills of teachers and artists
through professional development, mentoring and
side-by-side teaching.
22- Develop a culture and climate for learning
through the fine arts, enhancing students
opportunities to perform and express themselves
artistically. - Participate in evaluation activities to
demonstrate the positive results of systematic
teaching of fine arts.
23The curriculum in Artstream schools
24- Begin by continuing and enhancing established
arts education programs which include music
education for grades 4-6.
25- Add a comprehensive music education program for
grades K-4 providing music instruction twice per
week for 30 minutes in those grades.
26- Fully develop at least one other fine art form to
be offered to all students in the school, K-6.
27- As time in the schedule and funds permit, the
schools will add instruction in the remaining
fine art forms.
28- All the schools use the Utah State Fine Arts Core
Curriculum as a framework to guide instruction
and assessment.

35Expected Outcomes For Students In Participating
Artstream Schools
36- Students will receive quality arts education that
is interconnected with instruction in other core
subject areas and tied to meeting the schools
student achievement goals.
37- Students may choose to attend one of 14 Artstream
schools, with established arts education
programs. This enables students to have access
to the Artstream program throughout the school
district.
38- Students will be able to demonstrate the arts
skills with K-12 arts portfolios developed by the
Utah State Office of Education Fine Arts
Department or another means collaboratively
developed by Artstream participants.
39Students with a variety of individual needs and
talents, participating in arts education classes
in Artstream schools, when compared with students
in non-arts education classes will have
- Higher achievement in core subjects for regular
and at risk students - Lower dropout rates
- Higher emotional intelligence
- Greater representation in arts education classes
as they progress through school.
40- Students will have the opportunity to participate
in K-12 arts activities, such as the Honors
Orchestra, which will enable them to interact
with teachers and students from all levels.
41- Students at all levels will have opportunities to
work and learn in a variety of age groups, with
different teachers as learning groups are created
to meet student needs.
42- Students will become known to the teachers and
other students at all levels, increasing the
likelihood of camaraderie and continuity of
learning in the arts.
43- Students opting to stay in Salt Lake District and
pursue additional courses in arts education
following the 6th and 8th grades in Artstream
schools will increase in number each year.
44- Students, their families, and school employees
will learn about the Artstream plan for a
comprehensive, K-12 arts education, online,
through professional development, K-12 activities
for students and families, school newsletters,
school community councils, faculty meetings,
parent councils, brochures, posters, mailings and
surveys.
45- To put it simply, we need to keep the arts in
education because they instill in students the
habits of mind that last a lifetime critical
analysis skills, the ability to deal with
ambiguity and to solve problems, perseverance and
a drive for excellence. Moreover, the creative
skills children develop through the arts carry
them toward new ideas, new experiences, and new
challenges, not to mention personal satisfaction.
This is the intrinsic value of the arts, and it
cannot be overestimated. - Rod Paige, Former Secretary of Education
- Mike Huckabee, Governor of Arkansas and Chair of
the Education Commission of the States.
