1
Throwing!
In the next 2 slides well tell you about discus,
javelin, hammer and shot put
Discus
Javelin
The discus is a round, almost flat object. It is
a weight that you throw. To hold it properly you
need to put your hand on top of the discus and
grip it with the tips of your fingers. Like
this To throw it, hold it in your writing
hand. Swing your arm to your bum, hand near to
the ground, then swing it up into the air, just
above your head and release it. Put your left
feet like this. Bend your knees! Always walk out
from behind the centre line!
The Javelin is a long object with a point at one
end. The black bit is the grip. It gets heavier
when you go through the different ages. You
through it like this, just follow your
through and release. In the javelin there is a
long, straight run-up. To run up properly you
need to do 8 steps, like this You can also get
proper shoes for javelin called javelin boots,
these have spikes on the heel as well as the
front of the foot.
2
Hammer
Shot put
The hammer should look something like this It has
a handle at the top, a chain in the middle and a
ball (weight) a the bottom.
This picture is of someone throwing the shot!
The shot is a weight in the form of a ball.
It needs to rest into the side of your neck. It
needs to fit in the tips of your fingers and your
elbow down.
To throw the hammer (standing throw) you need to
swing it above your head quite fast. Your feet
need to face the back of the circle. Swing the
hammer above your head by moving your hands in a
small circle (anti-clockwise), swing it about
three times. Then, let it go just above your left
shoulder.
These four pictures show you how to do a spinning
throw.
In between 3 and 4 your arm should be straight,
letting go of the shot.
3
Running!
In this slide we will show you how to start a
race and how to run.
Starting a race
Running
When start a race in the down position it is
vital you get the foot work right. Follow this
diagram, putting your right foot where it says R
f and your left foot where it says L f. Your
right foot should end up where it says 3. Then
put your left knee in line with your right toes.
Tuck your left foot into your bum, put your hands
to the line like this
Line
This part will show points of how to run
  • When running you should
  • run with your back straight.
  • Run with your knees high.
  • Never look back at the person your beating.
  • Your right arm should swing
  • when your left leg goes forward
  • and vice versa.

There are special shoes called SPIKES. They have
tiny spikes at the front of the shoe to help you
run on the track.
  • Starting the race
  • On START, stay down.
  • On SET, stick up your bum.
  • On GO, run.

Hurdles
We have put pictures around this slide, we will
explain 1.Hurdles, 2.People
hurdling, 3.Cartoons,
4.A hurdles drill. 1 The black lines on
the inside of the hurdle are there to tell people
that that is the way to go over it. 2 When you
go over the hurdle, your lead leg should over
straight and your trail leg should be bent. You
should do three steps between each hurdle. 3 We
just found these on the internet and found them
funny! 4 This drill will help you be able to
jump the hurdles easier. Put about 5 hurdles in a
straight line about 1m apart, then jump over them
with 2 legs.

Long jump
High Jump
In long jump you run up to a board, then take
off, jump and land. But its not as easy as it
sounds! To measure your run up, you need to start
with your left foot (if you take off on your
left) and right foot (if you take off on your
right, (no.1). Get someone to count you, they
need to count 11 or 13 steps, then put down a
marker where your 13th foot lands. Start from
that spot and run towards the take off point.
When you take off it is important to no go on the
green part of the take off board, if you do, your
jump will be a no jump and it will not count!
Instead your foot needs to be about half-way
between the green part and the track(no.2).
  • When you high jump you run, from a
  • point in curved line towards a mat, then
  • you jump in a special way over a pole
  • and onto the mat, although it isnt that
  • easy!.
  • If you look at the picture in the top right-hand
corner you will see a picture, this picture shows
that starting point (sp), the run-up (ru) and the
mat. This picture is for if you start from the
right, but if you start from the left, its just
the same but the run-ups on the other side, you
need to start from the opposite side to the foot
    you take-off from.
  • These are a few steps you have to follow
  • Start from the mat and do five steps round the
bend (red part), and three steps on the straight
(yellow part), mark that place with an object
e.g. shoe, that is your starting point.
  • Turn around so you are facing to the right of the
mat, then run in a straight line, turn curve
when you are half-way between your starting point
and the mat. When you come to the middle of the
    mat, jump.
  • Jump upwards then bend your back just before you
come back down and push your body over the bar,
lifting your bum and legs so they dont hit the
bar (if you do hit it then it will be a no-jump).
  • Do it a bit like this

1 2 3
When you take off, bend your knee so that you can
put spring into the jump. Stretch your legs and
arms out in front of you hands nearly touching
your toes. When you land lean forward, because if
you fall back you jump will be marked back.

Triple jump
Pole Vault
In the pole vault you take a run up, then you
place a long, bendy stick in a dip that is just
in front of the mat. When the stick is placed in
the dip it starts to bend, at that point you need
to start to lean backwards. When the stick starts
to straighten you need to lean back a bit more
and then start to push you legs upwards. When it
is nearly straight you need to straighten your
legs fully and trust your self in to the air and
push your legs over the pole, turning in the air
so that you face the ground, then bring the rest
of your body higher so that no parts of your body
touch the pole, if they do it will be counted as
a no-jump.
The triple jump is made of three jumps, the hop,
the step and the jump. The hop The take-off
board is further back then in the long jump, so
you have to do a 11-13 step run up from that
take-off board! Then from your mark run up to the
board a take off with one foot, because its a
hop you need to land on that foot as well. The
step After you have done the hop you have to
just jump onto the other foot. The jump On the
jump you need to jump from the step foot and
land on both feet, this finishes the triple jump.
In the UK we have some of the two best triple
jumpers in the world, Jonathan Edwards and Ashia
Hanson.
