Very few really seek knowledge in this world.
Mortal or immortal few really ask. On the
contrary, they try to wring from the unknown the
answers they have already shaped in their own
minds justification, explanations, forms of
consolation without which they cannot go on. To
really ask is to open the door to the whirlwind.
The answer may annihilate the question and the
questioner. The Vampire Marius, Anne Rice,

Critical Thinking Guidelines
  • What is the purpose of what you are learning?
  • What questions are raised and which are you
addressing in your notes, reading and classroom
    participation?
  • What information are you using to answer the
    questions?
  • What inferences and conclusions can you reach
    with the information?
  • What then is the main idea? Can you explain the
    main idea?

5
  • What are your assumptions? What are you taking
    for granted?
  • What are the implications of the conclusions and
    concepts you are learning?
  • From what point of view are you looking at the
issue? Is there another point of view?
  • (Source Paul, Richard and Linda Elder (2006) The
    Foundation for Critical Thinking.)

6
How to Think Within the Ideas of Geography
  • Recognize where your ideas come from.
  • Be able to think within alternative world views.
  • Recognize that geography is both a physical and
    social science.
  • Avoid close mindedness.
  • Question your ideas!
  • Recognize that you may be thinking in a new way!
