Title: The literary criticism of Martin Amis

1
The literary criticism of Martin Amis
  • By Jake, Endia, Kayla,
  • and Kendra

2
Purpose of Criticism
  • The purpose of the criticism in Martin Amis
Lucre, Love, and Literature is to give the
reader an explanation of why Amis writes in the
styles that he does. It explains Amis as a writer
of stylist and satirist. Amis is not interested
in the whether his novels are good or bad in
regards to its significance. He is more
interested in whether people think his style of
    writing is good or bad.

3
Is the debate clear?
  • Yes, the author clearly states his point and
reinforces his argument with proof from Martin
Amis. Such as London Fields, Times Arrow, The
Information. Other critics include, John A. Dern
    and James Diedrick.

4
Authors focus
  • The author wants to focus on Amis attitude of
writing good or bad. He does not worry whether
his works are considered good or bad to critics.
He just wants his literary works to be considered
    great based on his style.

5
The authors sources
  • The author of this criticism does a great job of
making a point and backing it up with evidence.
He uses many other critics as well as a great
deal work from Amis himself to reinforce his
    points of view or arguments.

6
Dominant method of persuasion.
  • The dominant method is clear in the article. The
author has used many critics that were named
before. These critics and the quotes he
integrates into his argument are the reason this
author is so persuasive. The best way to persuade
a literary piece is to use other authors to
    reinforce your argument.

7
Thesis Statement
  • The thesis statement is Amis is thus more
interested in good and bad writing than in
literature that attempts to delineate the good
    and the bad.

8
Organization of Argument
  • The argument is organized through the author
stating his point of view and then using several
different sources to reinforce the argument
stated. He also uses quotes from other authors
such as John A. Dern, James Wood, and Richard
Todd to reinforce the argument with an outside
    source.

9
Main Argument
  • The main argument states that Amis is more
interested in whether or not he writes good or
bad , rather than literature that tells the good
and the bad. The argument also states that he
Amis uses satire and different styles in his
    writing.

10
Is the author correct?
  • We decided as a group that the author is false.
We do not believe that any author would write a
piece of literature and not care whether or not
the public enjoyed what he/she wrote. Yes, he
does worry about the style of literature that he
uses however, it does not mean he does not care
about the whether his literature is considered
good or bad to his readers. Authors write to
express their ideas and everyone wants their
thoughts to be considered. This is why we do not
    believe the author is correct.
